Does the VH-140 sound kickass through the FX send?
Just wondering. I'm considering ripping off the VH-140's preamp and putting it into a pedal, then tuning it so it can be changed from a pristine clean boost to a standalone ultra high-gain preamp just by turning the gain knob.
Would be a bad idea though if it's mostly the power amp that makes the amp sound so kickass.. so please tell me how it sounds from the FX send jack into a pair of headphones / cab sim or whatever.
And while we're at it, to deliver that crushing oversaturated Suffo tone from Effigy, where do you put the gain knob, provided your pickups are pretty high output? (EMG, X2N, etc). I'm looking to tune the circuit so that you don't run out of "usable" gain at 7, but rather at 9 or so.
Thanks!

WHY OH WHY. There are plenty of good OD or boutique distortion pedals that will do the same job a lot better for a lot less money and lot less work. Why would you buy a legendary amp for 500$ + shipping just to butcher it into a pedal?
Just buy the goddamn amp and USE it man.

Because if he can get the preamp circuitry into a pedal, he wouldnt need to.

Shipping is $699.. Anyway, this is not to save money, just to have fun (building pedals yourself is pretty expensive compared to buying premade ones).. and i figure it might kick ass
I'm not butchering anything, I'm building from scratch (ordering components, putting them together)

on a similar tip ...
if im just using mine as a pre for now, should i disconnect the poweramps (ie is it wasting power), or do i have to leave them connected for the pre-out to work? how would i go about doing that / would it be worth the trouble.

Does the pre sound good?
As long as the volume is at zero, the power consumption will largely be the same whether you plug in a cab or not. (Not true for Class A amps, but these are Class A/B).
Joam: He mailed you back? Good

it sounds pretty fucking good, but i have it set up like this...
ampeg xlr balanced out > mic preamp > maudio soundcard > gr2 cab simulation
the clips i posted in the other thread were done using it that way.
volume @ 0? i have to turn it up to at least half to get a signal, and even then i have to boost it with my mic pre before it hits the soundcard. should the pre-out be unaffected by the volume knob?

There's no master volume? It should affect it, it controls how much volume from the preamp hits the power amp.
I'll be running it like this:
Code:
Vh-140 clone -> another preamp -> FX processor -> poweramp
\-> <bypass loop> -/
So i can run it both as a preamp and as an OD, with a looper function in the box so i can change on the fly.

no. the two channels both have their own volume knob, there is no overall master. if i don't turn up the volume on the channel, there's no signal from the xlr out. even at half the output is very low.
so if theres no cab feeding off it, it won't be using the poweramps?
