It depends on a lot of factors. How long were you playing for? Did you bend your wrist? Did you warm up?

i was playing for like 4 minutes. i played some easy powerchord stuff if that counts as a warm-up. it was bent.

since i dont know how u hold the fret i dont know if this is the reason...but if u watch guitarist like diamond darrel who have their guitars very low when playing, their wrists will arch(bend??) more than when u have ur guitar higher up (like beatles or something)...to much bend on ur wrist when u play is not good for u
i cant explain it in detail but research carpal syndrom, and u will find much about it...has something to do with the bones pressing on the two main nerves going thru ur wrists

it probaly has something to do with ur own anatomy/body to....if u watch guitarist like hetfield, he has always had his guitar very low and not had any problems with that (that i know of), but if ur a shot person with shorter arms, it will be more natural to have the guitar higher up...of course, if ur a poser then play till ur wrists break, up to u

I'm assuming you did a lot of practicing the day before then?

Also, yes, having your wrist bent is VERY bad. It can actually damage your wrist. Always keep your wrist straight. What bending your wrist also does is it strains the muscles because of how far they have to reach. You can develop carpal tunnel syndrom and even tendonitis. Both will destroy your playing.

Whenever you feel any sort of pain in your arm, stop playing and let it rest for a while. If you ignore it, then you can seriously fuck up your wrist. Make sure you warm up too.

I doubt it's the larger frets. Make sure when you barre chords you don't do "banana fingers." That is, when you go for a barre chord your index finger should be like :

)

as opposed to:

(

where the beginning of the curve in both of those "pictures" would be your knuckle joint. Same goes with 3-string power chords with the respective fingers involved. Doing "banana fingers" can really fuck your wrist up.

it might be the changing temperature that is doing you. some how, those people with arthritis, or the likes, can feel in advance when a storm is comming, and their bones are affected when the weather, or tempurature, or presure changes.

i dont have arthritis, but those fucking docs say that if i continue fucking around with my wrists, then it can develop into it, and plus, my bones usually SORT of hurt during the winter.

try dipping your hands in room tempurature water for about a minute or so before trying to play your guitar?

FUCK i cant type today!

I had this problem when I first started playing a 7 string. The wider neck put alot of strain on my fretting hand and I would get wrist pain after about 5 mins playing. This stopped after a few days, presumably when I had built up the wrist strength to handle it.
Try altering the height of your guitar (do you have the same problem whether you sit or stand to play?). As has been said, if you feel pain, stop immediately and rest. It's not worth the risk of long term damage.

i tend to get pain in the muscles of my forearm and parts of my upper arm. i find it really hard to use my fingers to pick instead of the wrist and arm. whenm i do use the wrist my forearm wobbles also. as a result my speed picking is pathetic and i am burnt out playing my own songs after a minute.

i tell you what i found good to build up strength in your wrists, forearms and arms. Was to work out with some weights for a bit. It helped me

practice wanking with your other hand..that way the load of stress isn't focused on only one wrist.

honestly, i've never encountered this problem..but if i did, i would just take some time off playing. let your wrist rest..maybe even stretch it some..and then when you start playing again, try and stretch your wrists a little before and after playing.

I agree. CTS and tendonitis can be quite fun, and can make great excuses for not being able to participate in daily behavior!

Lots of people say this, but when i play my right hand hardly moves at all, like minimal movement even while speed picking just learn to move your hand and leave your wrist in set place.

When I'm first learning something, it usually is a pain to do. For instance I'm working on a Martyr song, that has this weird power chord jump, and even when I practice it slow, it's a pain. I don't force it too much, I practice enough so I gradually get the hang of it. The only way I'll be worried about the pain, is if I play it for a month and the same thing still bothers me.

It all depends on what you are doing, and if your hands are not used to it. The key is to not overdo whatever is hurting your hand, and if the pain never goes away, then try a different approach to it, cause you're probably doing something wrong.
