I need some advice on recording equipment

Hi, I have recently got interested in recording my songs, in my one man band.

I haven't got much money, and I am looking to know what digital multi-track recorder I should buy... I'll be connecting it to a Shure SM 57...

I was thinking of getting a Korg D4, because its cheap and seems to do the job well. All I want is something to record onto with good quality recordings. Not looking for a professional recording but yeah... I dont know much bout recording equipment so...

Advice please.

EDIT: Oh, I been thinking of recording onto my computer instead of getting a multitrack recorder. My sound card is very very good! Its a Sound Blaster X-FI Fatal1ty Edition... its both for gaming and audio creation. But when I try to go 'Line-in' my quality sounds crappy.

EDIT 2: Some software recommendations will be fine, pref: freeware. Thanks so much for the help, btw I have used the search, but .. there aint many.

Thanks.

Or I should just get a Shure SM 57 w/ XLR-to-Jack Lead? and record on my computer seeing as I have a very good sound card?

Your soundcard is not really good enough IMO. Any of these will work:

Presonus Firebox($300)
Digidesign MBox Mini ($300)
M-Audio Firewire 410($300)
M-Audio Delta 44($150)
Mackie Onyx Satellite($200)

These are all Firewire except the Delta, which is PCI, but has no mic pre's so you'll need to get one for it.This type is preffered over Firewire....more stable since it's connected directly to the motherboard. No big deal though. Stay away from USB ones, they are not as stable.

Your best deal would be that Mackie one. It comes with Tracktion 2, which I use, and to me is the easiest and BEST software you can use. the M-Audio comes with Protools Le if you wanna run that software.....but I hate Protools. Not the best program for a beginner either. Don't use those "all-in-one" DAW's like the Korg. They are just....not good. Trust me. Your comp>Mackie interface w/Tracktion 2=you recording easily and fast. Haha this sounds like an ad. Oh well. Here is a link to it on MF:

Thats not true, they say the new usb versions of audio ins are just as fine as firewire. Its an overblown problem that was present in usb 1.0 devices which almost don't even exist now.

I'll tell you like i tell everybody else. Get a firewire pci card put into your computer and get an Alesis Firewire mixer. They come in a 6,8,12 channel and its all you'll ever need.
