3 piece bands
We 'released' the singer in my rock and roll band recently. He was a good guitarist and an ok singer. He was just a little lazy.
We are guitar, guitar, bass, drums.
Anyways, we got another singer onboard who has some guitar playing experience. The problem is that his rhythm playing is not as good as the other guitarist in the band. We might approach the new guy and tell him that he should just sing for now and don't worry about the guitar playing.
We would reduce to a 3 piece. Do you guys have any experience or insight for a 3 piece?
I suppose we would have to rule out "2 guitars" type songs, or would the bass pick up some of the rhythm from the 'missing' guitar.
Anyways, gimme some feedback.

three pieces can be cool. it will give the other instruments alot more space to stretch out ( tell your bassist and drummer its time to pick it up). you may also want to consider simplifying some of the new singer's guitar parts. you could still do some cool stuff with him playing half the time. check out dysrhthmia. theyre a three piece (guitar, bass, drums, no vox), and they sound like a fucking orchestra.

Three piece bands are great. Sometime 2 guitarists is unnecassery. I mean look at all the great three piece bands out there Motorhead, Sodom, Destruction, and lets not forget about good old Macabre. Three piece bands give the members a lot more chance to use and experiment with their instruments

Nowt wrong with a threesome just look at Rush or Celtic Frost, Rage or Coroner! Plenty of bands only have one guitarist and it hasn't harmed their career.
I played in a band where I was the only guitarist and it worked ok. It gives more space to the other instruments at times. However, I do prefer to work with a 2nd guitar cause I love the harmonies and interplay of riffs.
There's no reason why your vocalist can't fill in on some guitar parts and with practice he should improve.

Yeah,
well, the strategy I suppose is that I would have to elaborate on my existing basslines a little more than what I'm doing now.

for backing solos, would you just use a looping pedal in a live situation or just get a guitarist for your gigs?

I wouldn't worry about it personally, I like the sound you get when theres a solo without rhythm

no one mentioned venom
three pieces are cool, its easier to work with. just sometimes it lacks what a second guitarist would do. but nonetheless, 3-pieces are cool

yeah in the studio you can make a backing track for your solo. when you are a three piece i dont think peeps care if you cant play the rhythm while you also shred the lead. not many people can do that anyway.

3 peices are the best in my opinion. Especially in the stoner/doom department:
YOB
Boris
Melvins
Sleep
Sloth
High on Fire
dot[.]
Dystopia
Probably more too.

No, Morbid Angel was a 4 piece on the first two, Richard Brunelle.
They were three piece on Covenant.
They had Erik Rutan on Domination.
True, it does sound different with 3 piece no doubt. I really like the bassline on Covenants "sworn to the black" tapping interlude.
Necromonicon is 3 piece as well.

i play in a threepiece and i must say it totaly rules; voting is easier, you get bigger amounts of cash when you divide the fee in three , you dont need a big rehearsal space, you can travel in one car, etc.etc.etc.
