Muting?
Yo.
I've got a question. If there's a riff on bass like:
---------------------------
------------------7-6------
---------7-6---------------
--0-0-0-------0-0----------
How do you mute lowest string when you start to play the 3rd one? Any special techniques?

Or play it on the second string instead of the third.

if you play with a pick you can use your picking hands palm ( a palm mute).if youre a fingerstlye player just rest your plucking hand thumb on the low E when you move up to A or D, or just use one of the fingers on your fret hand to lightly mute the string in question.

Muting on bass sounds terrible IMO. Just thought I'd add that for no particular reason

im big on frethand muting lately. like when used in a funk or jazz context. especially to make a note stacatto. it gives your basslines great bounce.

i'll try the thumb thing, but i'm not sure about it cause my line is quite faster than that. thanks guys, and if you'd have any other ideas they're welcomed

actually i've tried the thumb, and i have to say it's too fast to mute it in that way. putting one of not playing finger in plucking hand isnt best idea too ;P any other options?

when youre plucking the strings, i assume you rest your thumb on the pick up (depending on your bass). simply treat the string youre trying to mute as if it were the pick up and anchor your thumb there as you pluck notes on the higher strings. as for the fret hand mute, you want to use a finger from your fretting hand (i.e. fret 7 and 6 on the D string with your pinky and ring fingers
respectively, and use your middle to mute the E string) . if you cant use either of these techniques at your intended speed you need to practice them more. try playing the line at half speed, and working your way up. once youve practiced it a bit you should be able to mute at a very brisk pace. for an excellent example of fret hand muting check out some of rocco prestia's playing with tower of power.
