Open back has a different style of projection. It's a lot more open sounding and cuts through a lot, awesome if you play like 50's and 60's music through a vintage combo or something, but open back cabs generally don't have nearly as much bass response and punch as a closed back cabinet does. Open back designs also feed back a bit more in high gain settings. Closed back is generally preferred by all high gain freaks because of this.

Bigger cabinets also yield more bass. Hence an ordinary 2x12 will have less bass than a 4x12 generally, if they're of the same construction quality.

IMO = In my opinion

Open back fills the room more, while the closed back has a much more directed sound. Closed back has way more bass and is punchier and tighter, while an open back will be louder.. Given all other parameters are the same.

Do what i do, and run both together- one open back 2x12, and one closed back 2x12... sounds great

You want an open backed cab for when you've got a really reverby, chorusy, clean passage, sounds 'lush'!

Even better, a PORTED oversized 4x12 like a Genz Benz(br00t3l) with a half-open 4x12(like Boogies) cab on top, as a full stack. Maximum projection, and perfect balance between bowel moving 30Hz frequencies and high end cut and projection for those leads.
