Secret- Orange Thunderverb 50w
I got some inside info on Orange, apparently they are ready to unexpectedly reveal a 50w head + combo version of the Thunderverb 200. Keep your eyes peeled, it should be unveiled at the Frankfurt expo this week. The guy I spoke to (whilst on my amp hunt round local stores) reckoned it will set a new benchmark for metal amps. Hmm, anyway it might help some of you out who are considering new amps- retails at around £1300 I think. Not sure about US pricings though.

they can be... but if you dime the gain on a rockverb, you can get some emo/screamo tones out of it
if you want examples... Silverstein... Underoath... uhhhh... yeah.... personally, if i had an orange, i'd just run it at full power with a booster and a fuzz infront of it.... STONER DOOOOOOM styles.

I'm not too thrilled myself with oranges, they seem useless for what I do. Hiwatts on the other hand are along the same line as Orange, but do high gain a bit better... Think Sleep.

sleep used laney pro tubes... in their one single video, it shows a zoom in on one
that, and the guitarist dropped his laney for a custom matamp setup... which he still uses in High on Fire... and it sounds fuckin sick... blessed black wings album has the sweeetest stoner distortion.
and i found that stoner bands who use hiwatts usually have them because they take fuzz pedals very nicely. Example: electric wizard... well they used sound cities... but thats basically a relabeled hiwatt. Hiwatts are known for the rediculous amount of clean headroom... so i dont get how they could be good for high gain...
funny story: my cousin has an ORIGINAL hiwatt custom 50 (from before hiwatt went out of business)... and all i can say is its a HEAP of poo... the best distortion i've gotten out of this is a sad 70's psychadelic fuzz... kinda like the Who... and probably applicable to some rockabilly.... and the only way to do it is plug into the High input on the bright channel, and dime all of the knobs except the post gain... i REALLY want to try a pedal on it though and dime the volume. It gets loud, really fuckin loud... but it doesnt get high gain by itself. It also sounds really nasal... very little bass goin on...
orange rockverbs have loads more gain and LOADS more bass... i'd choose them over a hiwatt for a heavy music situation.
Soeru... do you knwo any heavy songs with hiwatts that can change my mind honestly, i'd LOVE to hear a hiwatt sound good for once (and outside of a green day recording)

Check out UK doom band The River. The guitarist uses a RAT into a Hiwatt Custom 100.

ROFL my bad. Yeah I know Sleep used a Laney in that video, such a killer song.
As for metal bands that use Hiwatts.... uhh, give me a while I'm not sure. :P
