Drummers telling us what to do
I've been jamming with some guys lately and things are going ok. The drummer is driving me nuts with his opinions of how we should be doing things. he can't even keep the time in check.
he's telling us how he wants the vocals done, what covers and song types we should do. He's got shitty ass gear and he's always late. he hasn't done his homework and always complains about his old lady.
Are all drummers like this? Should I cut him some slack?
What are your standards/expectations for an adequate metal drummer?
Anyways, this weekend coming up, if he hasn't got his shit down, he's out!
No offense to any drummers out there...

my drummer does that. But he tend to listen because he makes the band and because he does have alot of interesting ideas.

Um considering how ridiculously hard it is to find drummers interested in metal these days, just try to get along with him as much as you can until you find a more adequate one behind his back, then kick him out.

I'm havign the same problem with my bassist. We haven't been rehearsing all of us together, manly because of domestic issues, so we've been practicing individually. He doesn't practice at all. We know this because not only can he not play even the simplest of basslines that me and my friend have written, but his computer which has all the music written in plain view for him doesn't work. We know he doesn't want to practice because he would have told us that his computer wasn't working. It's pissing me off that we can't get him to work, and even more-so that we don't know alot of good bass players who would be interested in being in our band.
If you're drummer doesn't shape up. Kick his ass out. It's better to have no drummer than one who's holding you back in some way.
Besides. Us drummers, we can be easily replaced.... two words..... drum machine.

I worked with a drummer a few years ago who turned up on time, learnt the tunes, was open to ideas and willing to try them, could keep time and was inventive. We used to listen to him when he had suggestions and ideas because he was a bloody hard worker and was giving it his all and damn did he come up with interesting ideas!
Give your drummer the boot, he is lazy and has ideas above his station. Tell him to get his own house in order before he dictates to others. He can start by turning up on time the tardy bastard and then learn the tunes! If you say this to him he will storm off in a huff therefore saving you the trouble of telling him he's fired!
Bassist are notorious time wasting bastards also. They probably can't learn songs because that takes brain function
We used to have another drummer who would want to scrap whole songs just because he couldn't come up with one small drum fill! Twat!

If the dude was like a super badass at the drums and used to tech for Tony Laureano or something, I'd say he's probably got a right to be a little overbearing, but this guy just sounds like a complete nerd. Get rid of him.

Drummer or not, the guy sounds like he has a shit attitude and work ethic. Replace him if you can, but sever him from the band. You need a working team to make a band enjoyable. This dude sounds like a control freak and a loser in all walks of life. I really feel sorry for his family. I've played with some good drummers and they are great team players. Don't short yourself or the band by dealing to long with this dude.

This is a stupid thread. Just because someone is a drummer it doesn't mean they suddenly grow a controlling personality, you just found the wrong drummer.

Oh motherf-
Well, especially 'round here, drummers are scarce. Really rare to come across one. All of those fucken mallcore-kids buy BC-Rich guitar-starter packs, they should make drum-starter packs. So unless it's easy to get a new drummer, suck the use out of him for as long as you can.

Exactly. It clearly has nothing to do with him being a drummer and is all directly related to his personal behavior. If you can find someone else, do so, else put up with it or put your foot down.

Smack him in the face and say "no drummer, that's a bad drummer!". Should work.

I forgot to mention that he has skins on his toms that are literally indented by at least an inch in the center and he hasn't indicated that he's going to be buying new ones yet.
Yeah, it's hard to find drummers around here also. I've invited him over to my house plenty of times to allow him to practice but he hasn't called to do so.
My guitarist says that he used to play drums and he use to practice on his couch with cushions. In other words, he didn't need to use his kit for every private practice session.
So, from what I gather, most drummers are told what to do. Good.

No, drummers aren't told what to do. They're every bit as important as the guitarist, bassist, or vocalist. Possibly more. This guy's just an immature little dick and needs to be ejected. Use a fucking drum machine in the meantime, unless you're playing gigs or something.

I'm not saying that they're less important band wise but the most important.
Funny though, you're suggesting that I replace him with a machine. We did that last session since he was outta town. The drumming was great!

HAHA!
What's the difference between a drummer and a drum machine?
You only have to plug the information in once.

i'd rather have a real drummer than a drum machine. if the guys an asshole...either tell him he's an asshole in a not really rude way and maybe he'll get with the program...otherwise kick that fucker to the curb. it is kind of a bitch to find drummers though...
