Hey JOAMdude, how is that ibanez to play, whenever i see those type of bridges they always look like the strings are too close to the pickups.
whats it like?
cheers.

well the neck is fuckin great, very slim profile and fast.
i wouldn't know what to say about the bridge since the pickups have never really bothered my comfort very much, but it is a very good guitar (for me at least). Mahogany body, quilt maple, 24 frets, wizard neck i really like it!
EDIT- my palm is ALWAYS resting on the bridge for the EAD strings

Oh yeah, my Ibanez Universe set me back 800$ with the case, and back in it's day it used to cost $1,800(the new UV777's cost that much these days). And my neckthru Charvel model 5FX with Schaller Floyd and hardcase > 400$ + shipping.
Buying used gear is the greatest decision I've ever made.

My favorite guitar atm;
90's Hamer Slammer Series + EMG81 (gonna replace with DiMarzio Tone Zone bridge and PAF PRO Neck)
Paid £249 for it on Ebay! What a fucking bargain, the whole guitar is awesome, the neck especially!

Yeah. It's cool, I just don't like the deformed-ish 80's style stuperstrats, I prefer the later Kramer Strikers/Proaxes and Charvel styles.

Yeah I saw it, those Rave series are no different from the Bronze series unfortunately.

I think it's wonderful. It's my favorite body style, by far the most comfortable I've ever laid hands on...

Azagthoth used a RAVE Ironbird that he routed for a locking trem and and a single coil at the neck and then re-painted a million times. and switched necks and well you get the picture.

ESP LTD Viper 2005
http://www.carlinoguitars.com/images/Picture_263.jpg
Paid $770 for it and a nice case. Quite happy with it, though I later on found out that for like $10 more I could've gotten the 7-string version (which was also 25.5" scale rather than my guitar's 24.75"). Replacing the EMGs with ToneZone+PAF Pro, probably this weekend. The guitar has no factory-made string ground! Going to have to drill a hole from the cavity to the place where the bridge screws in and solder a wire or something. Pain the ass.

I have the exact same guitar as you, only my maple top looks better . I put in the ZW EMG 81/85 set and it sounds so much better than the stock. The stock pickups are shit on this.
Also, theres no way you're gonna put an OFR in there. Impossible.

No actually, I know I originally claimed this, but I later found out it was not a Rave but an International series, one of the very first Asian made imports that BC Rich made in the 80's. It had a crappy vintage trem and just 1 pickup, 1 vol, 1 tone, 22 frets, and chrome hardware. But yeah he's swapped the neck about 4 times.
Raves are plywood. Internationals were solid wood, probably poplar.

Aahaha nah man, I've seen some people with huge collections of killer MIJ guitars that in total only set them back as much as a Gibby les paul supreme would. Would make any sensible guitar consumer eat himself with jealousy. :redneck:
This is why I love buying used. Not only do you get killer prices but you can also find superior import guitars made back in the day that are now rare and discontinued(like all my guitars. )

oh yeah.. if you routed a cavity for it...
that aint easy though, and is very dangerous.
route a large cavity in the back for the springs, route a recessed area for the floating trem, and put a fairly large hole connecting the two.
of course its not impossible, but highly impractical

i'm not gonna stop you from ruining a perfectly good guitar with a floyd.
just remember it will be expensive especially when you're paying $150+ for the OFR itself. Not much sense putting all that work on a $350 guitar.

nahhh... i have a rave ironbird under my bed. Its not exactly plywood... its a combination of what looks like particle board and maple... what they claim to be "chesswood". It has dark lines and light lines, as iff it was perfectly glued together... its kinda funny. One of these days i'll get a new neck for it and refinish it... one of these days... the broken warlock neck it came with has a nut that looks like it was carved out of a melted bottle.

Nope man, all Raves are plywood, like all of the Platinums and Bronzes, plywood is compound wood sheets glued together, therefore explaining the mixture of textures and colors in the wood. It doesn't mean it'll sound like shit but it'll definitely not sustain as much as a solid body...
Chesswood = leftover wood from producing other bodies but NOT compound, it's solid, it's usually poplar or nato or something of the same family tree, nice warm sounding wood, this is what the NJ series Ironbird I have is claimed to be made from in it's brochure section. I can show it to you if you want.
Isn't that the guitar you tried to sell me ages ago?

first of all it's a 700 dollar guitar
and secondly why would it be bad to put an OFR on that guitar?

Haha I just have 3 man.
JoamDude it wouldnt be a bad idea at all. But considering the amount of money youre gonna spend on routing and a floyd rose, you might just want to save an additional 100$ and get yourself another guitar that already has a floyd.
But if you really like that guitar then it's a killer investment then.

you paid $700 for that?
mine was $350 at guitar center
floyds are just kinda gay. they're nice occasionally but overall fixed bridges are just nicer. This is coming from someone who was really into floyds, but then i got a nice fixed bridge guitar and have since been changed.
besides for the money you'd spend on getting this guitar fixed for a floyd, you could buy a nice second guitar with a floyd.

You can't be saying that as a fact, that's just ur opinion, even though personally I too am a fixed bridge lover.

yeah ill probably want one fixed and one trem so why don't i just get one with a trem cavity instead of going to a bunch of troubles to have ONE expensive operation.
What is a good guitar for adding stuff so for instance has just a mahogany body and LFR and every thing else, something i can put Dimarzio's, OFR & Nut, new neck, tuners? you know something i can really invest in, i just need a shit guitar made out of nice wood. (pretty tough thing to find probably )

Um, if you are changing everything why would you want to buy a complete guitar? Just buy the body....... Warmoth, old Squier Body (without pool routing), Mighty Mite etc depending on your budget.

You can get loads of killer floyded guitars that need don't really need any upgrading for well under 400$ these days. Just search for "Charvel Model", Ibanez RG550, Jackson DK2M or Kramer Striker on ebay.

Then:
WRXT
KVX10
Some of the RR's in that range.
Kramer Vanguard or Imperial with Floyds(check Musicyo.com)
Or hunt down an NJ Ironbird, but they won't come so cheap these days, they're climbing in price apparently.

Yeah, something like that. I'm not too fond of Floyds or whammy bars in general so I'm getting it blocked off soon, though.

kinda funny you mention that. everytime i remove that lil red wrist band on the longer fin, everyone says it looks ugly. i just have that band to hold my picks.
but thank you. i just wished it was a neckthru guitar, but oh well, you cant win em all.

Best picture I could find of my guitar:

I wish I had a camera so I could post what the guitar I'm working on looks like. It's a Randy V shape, set-neck, 22 frets, shark fin inlays, completely naked. Bought it at a guitar shop for $100. It originally had a normal nut on it. So I was wondering, do any of you know if it's possible for me to put a locking nut on it?
