Pinky, less stressful and I find I'm more mobile to do other shit. Although I use both ring and pinky for the 1st-5th-octave powerchords, and depending on what I'm doing, I might even do index and middle, like for when I have to hammer on a 9th, or some other exotic extended interval.
Depends on what I'm doing, as I rarely use powerchords anyway.

I'm being honest really, I haven't found a great deal of black metal bands with any real depth. "Gr1m and kvlt" are more than acceptable qualifications for old fashioned black metal if they resort to the same riffs and production values the Norwegian bands did 17 years ago.

Well using the pinky is easier generally on the lower frets. Try it, you might pick up the bad habit though.

well actually Emperor stopped using corpsepaint so that is kinda how some bands don't do that stuff anymore. They're pretty damn good, as well as IMMORTAL!! their first album: Diabolic Fullmoon Msticism is badass loneliness and satanism and stuff. go buy it!/ pirate it

I use the ring.
I find it difficult to adjust to the frets when I use my pinky.
LIke if I were to slide from a powerchord in the first fret posistion to the ninth freth position, my fingers would end up: Index on nine and ring on twelve.

Alot of people will suggest using both the pinky and the ring in the beginning just to build pinky strength, which is fine by me. I've always used the ring though, and built pinky strength by beating the hell out of it.

You don't need huge hands to play powerchords with the index and middle, and no, that is not hampering your playing. In fact, you might be benefitting it, for all you know. If you can still do all the other stuff, then you're doing fine with your technique. Four string powerchords more or demand such a 'stretch'. |

i guess i might use my pinky sometimes..but generally its my ring finger. even on the higher frets, i use my ring finger out of habit and comfort...using my middle finger just doesn't feel as good for me.

The reasons I use my ring is:
It's easier to flip the bird at people in the audience while you're playing.
If you play barre chords, then it's the correct finger to be using.
It's easier to bend the string with the ring.
It allows for more ring/pinky legato's
Octave wise, I use my ring as well.
I suppose it goes to the rule, one finger per fret rule, which is classical I believe.

yueah thats right, i know an r-tard that does powerchords with first, middle and ring. Hes an r-tard.
Now, edpening on what im doing i go between pinky and ring finger fucking goodness.
If im down tear the headstock, i tend to do point/pinky for everything.
If im more up towards the pickups, and i'm playing slowly, i do pointer and ring.
For anything fast, i tend to do point/pinky if i have enough room, without enough room, i do point/ring.
If im doing more than powerchords like perhaps bar chords or full chords, i just make the adjustment. My brain is big enough so that i can do that.

i use my ring finger, I save my pinky for hammerons and changes that are around the powerchords, however being as how I usualy play Deathcore stuff the tuning is dropped and I rarely play a powerchord off of the first three strings, and each of those powerchords require one finger, I then use all 4 fingers to my disposale.
as for the "skip a string" powerchords, I use my index and my ring finger to hold down strings, and my middle finger to mute the middle string.

I alternate usually, depending on what it is I'm playing (of course) so both. BUT I have been using by pinky much more often recently so I'll say pinky for the poll's sake.

I reserve the pinky for these kinds of power chords:
5 8
2 or 4 etc.
Any that are only two frets apart are index/ring for me, octaves too.
