DiMarzio Blazes..

I had the guy at the guitar shop put a set of Blaze pickups in my 7-string guitar. When I picked it up, he told me the neck pickup was hot as hell and set it extremely low to balance the output with the bridge pup, which is raised up damn close to the strings.

I'm 90% sure the bridge pickup should be the hotter of the two pickups... do you think he put them in backwards? Any easy way to check?

Probably. Take the pickups out and check the back of the pickups for their imprint, I assume there is a "N" or "B" on the back of each to indicate the position they are meant for. Or maybe you just bought 2 Blaze pickups both meant for bridge positions. :/

I have a H-S-H Blaze config in my Universe and I don't have this problem, they sound amazing!

but how did it sound?

I just recently read a bit on this about pickup settings as at the bridge the strings dont vibrate quite as much as they do at the point above the neck pickup so the pickup has to be closer to the strings. as here the neck can be farther away due to th egreater deal or vibration.

make sense?

I keep the pickups on my Uni at the same height, and the neck Blaze definitely sounds a bit softer than the bridge pickup, the neck one has less output to compensate for what you said(stronger + wider string vibration at the neck pos.)
