I use Cubase LE that came with my recording interface. It is the cat's ass, I didn't like Kristal all that much. Cool Edit Pro is pretty cool and basic if you only need super basic functions, but Cubase in the long run is worth learning to use.

Seconded.

Bittorrent has a convenient way of making things free, as well.

Cool Edit Pro is a great program. It's fairly easy to learn and has a good amount of effects and stuff. I've used it to record a few things. Also:

Indeed, do people really think home musicians pay 400$+ for recording software?

Why not? You get access to patches and updates and service support. Maybe not that "average home musician" but thats not their target audience either.

Hence why Cubase has multiple versions of their program ranging from like 100 up to like 500 bucks.

And asking for 100 dollars for a recording program isn't anything.

Cubase LE is only OEM, you can't buy it seperately right? Patches and updates? You can still download them cracked whenever there's an update you know...

Fuck paying for software.

Cubase SE

No they don't update software with latest patches usually, just major releases. Also because it uses a dongle there are often conflicts.

Paying for software drives software production....

No actually, I've seen many minor update cracks on emule and other p2p networks. There are cracks that don't rely on dongles for authentification. You just need to look harder if you wanna save some $.

You're talking to somebody who has been downloading warez for about 13 years now. hah

Obviously there are cracks that remove dongles, the program wouldn't work without it. Although to download updates and all that you have to download and reinstall the entire fucking program again usually. Or do other things that are just annoying. Not to mention the time spent looking and downloadingn which sometimes can be a dead end.

Thats just an advantage to buying.

Audacity is pretty cool and free. Not a bad program really and it's open source. You can make it work with just about any interface if you know what your doing. Don't like something? Improve, update, and share it with everyone. I don't know why people pay large amounts of money for PC recording software that you have to wait for updates to repair or improve.

Edit: Either way, It's a great program to start learning how to record using a PC or MAC.
