Best amp for playing Death Metal "Live"?
I am been home recording now for a bit over a year and I have been using my V-Amp Pro. I am now looking to play some live gigs and start jamming and was wondering if I could get some advice as to what amp would be the best for playing Death Metal live? Anthing from $1000 and under.
Could I use my V-Amp Pro live? I have a Marshall MG Series 250DFX that I use to practice with in my apartment. Could I run the V-Amp Pro through the Marshall MG Series 250DFX for live and practice with a band?
Any info would be great!!!

Not really, I don't think a Marshall MG is going to cut it in a band situation with any 4x12.

Yeah that's a good suggestion too. But his spending limit is 1000$, he can do a little better.
Like I said man you have a ton of options buying 2nd hand. Peavey 5150/6505, XXX, Ultra(same as XXX). Perhaps some Mesa Boogie Mark heads, definitely an Ampeg VH140C head(400-500$) with plenty of cash left over for a very good cabinet(I suggest a Vader or a Framus).
BV is a great suggestion though, but if I had 1000$ I'd probably get either an Ampeg or a Peavey XXX. Legendary Suffocation tones!

If you're happy with tones from ur V-amp, then it's not a bad idea to get a poweramp for it and run it that way. That's probably what I'll be doing with my PODXT since I don't have an amp right now...

if you have a line in, its possible... but doing this mind you will bypass ALL of your marshall's knobs, including volume. So it will basically be liike plugging the Vamp just into a speaker. Personally, what i'd do, is i'd split the guitar signal, sent it likth thiss...
guitar --> vamp --> line input
(gitt) --> marshall input
and mix the tones to get something karazy going on.

Eh.... I wouldn't bother trying to utilise your V-amp Pro, especially not through the Marshall. The other guitarist in my band uses the Head version with a 4x12 cab and he can never be heard in the mix, even my thin-sounding JCM900 can be heard over him no matter how much I turn down. Just buy the Ampeg, as its 100% perfect for what you want, it even comes in a 2x12 combo if you didn't want to lug around a huge cab.

Um no, it's not going to bypass the volume knob bleeding. You need to run it in the FX loop return or aux in, the EQ and gain knobs won't work on it that way, but the master volume certainly will.
I would not suggest modeling devices for live use. "PodXT Live" my ass, they're not designed for being played in real live situations, at least not effectively unless you're going straight to the mixer. But if your club has no PA you're fucked. Through a poweramp and cab it's most definite that they won't sound anywhere as good as a real amp. The EQ range of any digital modeler is not dead on like a real amp, it won't cut through a band situation without some extreme EQ'ing, which doing it after a digital preamp will not produce good results. EQ'ing a digital signal will sound fuzzy and artificial. Ask some dude here that has used XT's live how much he hates them.
Krisiun use PodXT Pro's live, I've seen em 3 times and they sounded great, but I was later informed they were going direct to the PA with the cab-simmed XLR outs. Stage volume wasn't very loud either.

If you do some E-baying, you might be able to get away with a rack set up for that price. Such as a POD XT Pro and Poweramp. For about 1,500 i got away with a pod xt pro, crown power amp which delivers 600 bone crushing watts, Korg Rack Tuner. Rack mount power supply, and a gator rack thats got wheels. Check it out. It's not tube, but with POD's modeling it sounds really close to it.

And they are also a giant waste at $1600.

Trust me, as someone who was playing Line 6 stuff exclusively from 2002 up until about two weeks ago, they are terrible for any serious extreme metal application.

I've heard good things about their HD147 head. And Napalm Death were using one of their highest end heads(Vetta maybe) on their last record, and tbh I thought they were still using a 5150 on it.

Yeah for recording I think they're cool, but playing through a real amp and playing through a Line 6 anything... the difference is like night and day.

True, Line 6 stuff shines when it comes to recording....until you compare it to the real thing recorded properly. There was a series of clips someone posted over at thegearpage.net with a Bogner Ectascy, Mesa Dual Rec, and Soldano SLO recorded through a 4x12 loaded with Greenbacks and then clips of Line 6's simulations of those amps through a 4x12 Greenback simulation. No question the real amps had a whole different level of depth and presence compared to the emulations. No comparison.

Yep. Unfortunately with more expensive tube amps it makes it a lot harder to get extremely good sounding recordings without the proper knowledge on mic placement, EQing, preamplification, mixing, etc. which is why the sale of podxt's and similar has been going up over the past few years. Most home guitarists don't have the time or money to invest in getting their half stacks/amps to sound awesome on a recording.
I think most XT owners realize that they're not really meant for live use though, I see many XT owners that still use real amps in live situations.

My advice is to get the best amp head you can for the money, assuming you have a cab......didn't you get an Avatar cab w/V30's and G12T's in it? I thought you made a thread about it. BTW I am 2210thrash on the marshall amp forum. Anyhoo, you really should get a Marshall JCM800 2210 head and buy a Boss SD-1 overdrive to boost it, if you want the heaviest, loudest and best tone for brutal shit. Get one made after '86 and you are good to go. The early ones sound like crap. If you don't wanna use a Marshall, get a Peavey 5150 and use the "Rhythm" channel with the gain up fairly high. That is great tone too. you will need to have a bias mod done on it to get the best sound, but even without it the amp sounds great on that channel, believe it or not. The Marshall is your best option, but it will run you at least $800. 5150's are cheaper, but don't have the same crazy-ass harmonics and "presence". Don't bother running an amp modeler unless your recording. They don't cut live, at all.

Behemoth are using a Mesa, Bogner, and Promod 100 on their newest album, be sure to check it out when it's out. That is as properly recorded as you can get.

Yeah. When I played with Behemoth in Canada the guy had a Bognaer Uberschall. It sounded pretty damn heavy. They look cool too. but $2600 is a little crazy for an amp head, and the cabs are a grand too. Yikes!

Someday, I would really like to play one of those for REAL, the first time I saw one getting reviewed in Guitar Player magazine, I creamed. The PODxt Live's Metal Shop pack add-on had a Bogner Uberschall emulation algorithm on it, and it was easily the worst amp model in the entire collection.
Valtiel, thanks for that link, the differences between the real and the fakes are very eye-opening!
