stringing backwards on floyds

the new bc rich i got has a floyd that i'm not used to ... apparently you need to cut the ball-ends off the strings and lock the severed end down with a screw + a stupid little block at the bridge end.

first impression - fucking retarded!? is there a benefit to this design?

i read on another forum that you can string such floyds backwards, with the ball end at the head peg. is this a bad idea?

uhh as far as I thought this was the normal floyd style... anyway the way you described is how I restring floyd guitars ...have to cut the thin bit off wound strings, then feed it through the tuner and clamp it at the bridge, then wind it from there. Works fine for me

It takes 10 seconds to cut off the ball, slip it in, and screw it tight, it's not a big deal. The benefit is so that it is securely clamped into the bridge.

I do it exactly like that actually, but I generally snip the ends on the headstock anyway. Same shit really.

How on earth can something as simple and basic as this cause grief and confusion? Unless I'm misunderstanding it, (this is how I've always unquestionably set up floyds) the ball end locks through at the tuning peg and put the 'open' end of the string in at the bridge (the locking mechanism you speak of which is designed to accept the loose end). You'll even notice how some strings such as d'addario ones etc are coloured, which makes the head of your guitar look lovely. . Your common sense and logic must be pretty malformed if that concept pains you though

Often I think too many people just never develop common sense cos they rely on others telling them the most basic and pointless things

Well I don't understand why you'd string it backwards because the other way is "too difficult". Like I said, even if you put it backwards, you're still gonna open the clamp and everything, so how fucking long does it take to snip the end off?

if you string it backwards, you'll have the balls hanging off your tuners, and you'll cut them off anyway. Stop fuckin complaining.

You don't understand how it works so you talk shit about it? Of course there's a benefit, this design has been around for decades. Read up on it before you knock the design.

I string my Floyd equipped guitars backwards because the strings normally break at the bridge where it makes the 90 degree angle to go into the locking block.

The idea is that you pull the string through the tuning key so the ball rests against the post, cut the string about a 1/2" past the saddle locking bolt on each saddle, tune up normally. If/when your string breaks you have left over string you can pull off the tuning key and lock back down into the bridge.

You shouldn't have loose string hanging off the tuning keys like if you strung it up the normal way(prior to cutting off the leftover string).

Kleenx, I have been told that stringing backwards like this will cause abnormal wear to the fretboard and frets, as well as the metal on the bridge and locking nut. I have two Floyd equipped guitars that I string like this, I have strung these like this for over 10 years each, I have seen no abnormal wear. The guy who told me this was using that close minded, do it like you are supposed to mentality. Stringing a Floyd tremolo like this is tons faster in a live situation where the guitar can be retuned/strung in record time. FWIW I agree with you on the Kahlers. My guitars with those tremolos get way more playing time than the Floyd equipped guitars.
