Ever played a Rocktron GAP?

They're solid state preamps from the early 90's, supposed to have shitloads of gain. I am gonna be in the US in a few weeks and I might score one off ebay to take it back home with me, they cost as much as 130$ these days and there are different models, the original GAP, Pro Gap, and Gap v2 that runs on AC power like a pedal.

I figured it might be a better option than buying a Behringer V-amp 2 for playing at home, recording scratch tracks late at night, and possibly slaving it into any amp in the future for practice(this is what I'd mostly use it for).

It has rave reviews at HC. Has anyone ever played one? What can you say about it?

Another consideration I had was scoring an Ampeg SS-35 but I'm not sure I will be able to bring it with me due to weight restrictions, and I'm not exactly sure it has high gain sounds.

alright it finally arrived. here's my first impression ...

the gain really 'sings', absolutely no grit, sustains forever in a flat kinda way. makes me think of fantasy, maiden inspired type stuff. much better for soloing than for chording.

bass is surprisingly deep and clear. highs are warm and ring-out as stated, but feel kinda lifeless. mids seem to be non-existent.

clean is decent. bright and jangly, if a bit sterile and piercing at times.

i haven't really had time to tweak much, but the interface is a fucking chore. reminds my of my old rack synths. one knob for selecting 'parameter', one knob for adjusting said parameter.

two 'frequencies' which are displayed in digital values. gain, bass, treble, are also digital values scored -15 to +7 or something random for each. feels like programming a vcr. and since you can only tweak one of many parameters at a time, it's a bitch+half to dial in a tone.

i'll post some clips if anything interesting pops up.

edit: i tried it through my cab tonight using the ss140c as poweramp ... sounds better. i now fully appreciate the integration of the hush and noisegate into the unit.
