Need a new amp
I just bought a new guitar and I need to get a new amp.. my little practice amp is holding the guitar back I think. What do you guys recommend? Every amp on the market claims to be the best which makes it hard to say.. I want something smaller.. like 100 watts or less.. Something under 400 bucks I guess..

maybe a peavey bandit 112?
the amp manufacturers have u huge collection and it's difficult to choose, my favorite brands are Laney, Peavey, hughes and kettner and Trace Elliot.
it's your desicion, just go to the shops and try out all the amps they've got, haha, annoy the fuck outta them, it doesn't matter, as long as you find the amp that's right for you.

lol i'm always afraid of doing that annoying the fuck out of them.. That's why it took me 7 years to buy a new guitar.. I never wanted to go look like an idiot and drag them around "I wanna play this, and this and this" ya know? But I did it and found the guitar perfect for me.. Now I just need an amp.. I have a really frickin' tiny Fender right now.. I've played on a Peavy before.. My bass amp is a peavy.. but it's tiny too.. wasn't sure about the bigger ones I guess.. But thanks for the info. I'm going to Sam Ash today to buy a pedal and an amp.. I guess i'll just try them out and find one I like..

Well we just started pretty much. We don't have a sound nailed down yet. I guess it's going to be a Death Thrash type thing. I want to do gore grind.. But 3 of the other guys are in gore grind bands already so I don't think it'll end up being that. And I'm not going to use the fender in the band. That's just my at home amp to jam on. The place where we play has a Crate head/cabinet setup that I play on.. And for pedals I bought a Boss CE-20.. a Boss GE-7.. Boss RV-3.. and a Boss TU-2.. And then there's an MT-2 that I use where we practice already. So I didn't have to get one of those.

the TF 700? don't know that one man, sorry, I do know the linebacker and the hardcore max series, they are pretty damn good.
ah, Mr. Midnight, nice choice of pedals, I have the EDB3 bass distortion, CS2 compressor/sustainer, BQ2 bass eq and the BF2 bass flanger, boss pedals are nice.
does the TU2 have a light in it? I would like to buy it but I didn't try it yet, if there's a backlite on that thingy it might be usefull.
without light I won't buy it, I want to use it on stage. I also need a BCB6 floor board.
so you use the Fender at home, ah, ok, I thought you where gonna use it to fuck shit up in a rehearsal space, but Fenders are not really shredding machines if you ask me.
for at home, a nice warm and round sound might be nice to listen to, I guess.

I'm looking for a pic now, I don't know that series, but the hardcore max and the linebackers have kickass distortion, our guitarist can use his 7 string on both amps, he can't use it on a peavey 5120 and marshalls because the low b string tends to sound fucked up, on the laney's everything still sounds really tight, that's why we both love laney.
ah, on the website I see that the linebacker series have been replaced by another series.
the TF looks pretty nice to me, have you tried it yet? the tube fusion is the same idea as the hughes and kettner tourreverb amps and the marshall avt's.
that amp SHOULD sound pretty good, go for a test drive man...
If the distortion isn't that happening, use a boss metalzone or another external distortion pedal!

Def I dunno if the TU2 has a backlight on it or not yet. The reason I bought it mainly was because it's a main pedal and can power all the other pedals with the Daisy Chain. The CS-20 and the Daisy Chain had to be ordered so I just left everything there on hold and i'm going to pick it up next Thursday. But I'll let you know about the backlight question when I pick it up next week.
I know what you mean about Fender amps. I really like the distortion that the amp has but it does have a pretty warm tame sound.. I might take it with me to practice once to see just how different it is from the crate with the MT2.. I looked at a few amps.. But I really didn't play any of them. I looked at the Line6's.. But they looked a little too flashy to be anything great..
I really didn't know what to buy except what I already owned. And with what I wanted (under 100 watts and 400 bucks) The fender seemed to be a perfect fit.. 90 watts and 380.. <shrugs> I guess I don't HAVE to buy the Fender when I go to pick it up I could always just tell them I changed my mind. I guess anyone have any suggestions?
The sound i'm looking for is kinda like a cross between Dew-Scented and Dying Fetus I guess.. I've got a Gibson Gothic SG if that helps at all.

Shit I just thought of something I didn't think of that I wanted to ask you Def.. When you use your EQ.. What do you do with the settings on the amp? Turn them all up or down and just use the EQ? Or do you set the amp and then tweek with the EQ? Figured i'd ask you since you have basically the same EQ I do and this is kind of uncharted territory for me.

I normally set the settings in the position I like the best (on the amp!)
if you want an even fatter sound, use the eq, to boost the bass, middle or the treble, you'll get a bigger ehm 'magnitude' of that eq range (you know, the hrz range)
I use it for gigs, when I want more bass, I tune the eq pedal for heaps of bass, no mids and almost no treble, so when I kick the pedal, I get killer bass but no middle and almost no treble.
mind that I play Bass not guitar, but I have guitar experience and I know lots of the amps cuz I played on them
I also still need the fucking daisy chain, I use 5 9v batteries, that sucks. I just didn't have the time to buy one yet, though I have owned these effects for over a year, maybe I am just lazy.
It's just like you said, the fender is not a shredding machine, we have a fender deluxe 90 as a reserve in the rehearsal space but to be honest, I don't like it, for rehearsal and metal, it's not really any good.
but... for jamming at home, the sound might be quite conforting, you know, not the kinda sound you get an instant headache from, though I like the shredding machines better, hehe.
400 bucks, ehm, that would be like 400 euro's, think.. what can you buy for 400 bucks, man HEAPS if you ask me, how expensive is the Laney hardcoremax?
I'm looking at a page with amps right now, from a shop that's quite expensive so you can probably get a better deal, from the stuff I like I see a lot of Marshalls and a few hughes and kettners...
I don't know how expensive the Hughes and Kettner amps are in america, but our guitarist owns a 110w tube H&K and that can even handle his four string, it has 3 channels, distortion, crunch, clean, and it packs tremendous punch.
if you changed your mind, you still have time to look for something else, but you need to know what exactly you want to have. If I would buy a practise amp for a guitar, at home I would go for a H&k, Peavey or Laney.
Peavey makes affordable, good, amps, like the bandit 112, but I don't know how the prices are in america.
If you want, I can help you look for a nice amp, just tell me exactly what you want

i am also looking for a new amp. wondering if you can help? all i want is something good, simple as that. maybe a half stack? not quite sure yet. it doesn't matter what the distortion sounds like on the amp, not at all, thats what peadels are for. it just needs to sound really clean and really loud, then i can run distortion peadels through it. and i also like to play with a lot of bass. that hughes and kettner model sounds good can you tell me more?

yeah sure I'll help you,
that hughes and kettner our guitarist uses is a tourreverb from the attax series, the url to the H&K site is : www.hughes-and-kettner.com
And I made a mistake it's a 100w amp, with tube preamp. not a 110w.
That amp is really nice, but what kind of guitar do you use? and with what elements? and what about your music style?
You need to think of all the factors in choosing an amp, and ofcourse try out loads of amps, I can only point you in a direction to look further.
for playing with lots of bass, laney and hughes and kettner are nice, the more expensive peavey models are also good (xxl for example) but I don't know what ammount of money you want to spend on a new amp.

I guess that's what I should do.. just tell you what I want to sound like and go from there.. Well the sound the band is going for is more of a death thrash type.. they kind of want to sound like Dew-Scented.. the sound I personally want out of my guitar is like a Dew-Scented/Sepultura with a little bit of dying fetus.. I can imagine the sound I want in my head... I guess if you want song examples here's exactly what I want..
Dying Fetus - Praise the Lord
Dew-Scented - pretty much any
Sepultura - Beneath the Remains I guess if you could imagine a mix of those songs..
And you know what pedals I have already.. and the guitar I just got is a Gibson Gothic SG.. I don't even know if a sound like that is even possible..

well, i guess i want a death/thrash metal sound (most of the time). and i'm getting emg pickups for my yamaha rx1220 (not sure if that's right) ummmm..... probably a metalzone and a compressor/sustainer pedal from boss. right know i have the toneworks korg ag1 i think. not too worried on a price, but not too expensive. and i don't want anything too big either. like i said, probably a half-stack. can you push me futher in the right direction?

right, so you guys kinda want the same sound, well the secret to the sounds midnight described are the pedals those guys use, it's not the amps distortion...
get a metalzone if you want to create a sortwise distortion..
in the 100 w range, I would definetly go for either a peavey bandit or a hughes and kettner tourreverb.
that's if you want a combo, if you want metalsound, you got to check these amps out!
another verrrrry good amp make for metal is Laney, not verry common, but I've heard their amps and I fell in love with them, our guitarist had an old 'Linebacker' combo, it was small but it outclassed an avt marshall 275!!!
the linebackers newer brother, the HCM120R
Laney has a really deep sounding distortion, though the controls on the amp are crappy and they look pretty cheap, but that depends on the series, the newer hardcore max series are the succesors of the linebacker series.
Laney; www.laney.co.uk ----> products, 'Hardcore'
Hughes and Kettner; www.hughes-and-kettner.com ----> 'attax' series
Peavey; www.peavey.com ----> 'quicklink', guitar amps and effects.
check out those websites and form your opinion, I put my favorite on top, the laney, I have experience with all three amps, but it's also a matter of personal taste..
the amps listed above are all combo's, around 100 watts, but if you have more money to spend, the attax H&K range also has a cab/head available, so does the Laney Hardcore Max and peavey has the 5150 and the 5150II
Hm, I think that's enough advice for the moment?

Hey Def, what do you think of Crate? I went and played on a GX110 or 120 I don't remember.. it wasn't that bad.. cheaper than what I wanted to spend also.. and yeah i do want a combo.. I don't have the room for a head/cabinet right now.. so I need to stick with a combo.. it wasn't a bad amp..
