good, low price (decent quality) head......
I am currently using a Randall solid state head (RX120DHS). I would like to get my hands on a good low priced head with lots of room on the clean channel for stomp boxes.
It can be a single channel as I really wouldn't use a second channel all that much.
any suggestions.

Have you tried the distorted channel on that amp? Stock S.S. Randall crunch is pretty brutal. I'm just guessing those stomp boxes are for distortion.

A couple, and then, reverb, delay, harmonizer(near future), and an EQ(nearer future) I don't like to use alot of effects
this isn't like the greater SS heads it has okay distortion but it doesn't have that ever popular Randall crunch. and it's noisy as piss and feeds back like a bitch.

have you tried a noise supressor in the FX loop? That could help quiet it down a bit in terms of feed back / hiss.

You don't say whether you want Tube or SS. I'd recommend a Marshall 8100 head for SS (or even better an Ampeg VH140C if you can find one) both shouldn't be too expensive used. For tube i'd say Laney GH50L if you are in England (more expensive in the states), or maybe a JCM900 with EL34's. For mega clean head room, a Fender head would probably do but I have no real knowledge of them.

Yes, Ampeg VH140C if you have a stereo cab(or 2 cabs). 400$ ish, there are a bunch on ebay right now. The SS-70 and 140 heads are great too(the predecessors to the VH) and SS-150 is a mono version of the SS(1 poweramp, not 2 seperate ones like the 140's).
Oh yeah and you won't need a dist. pedal with those amps, guaranteed. Most brutal SS amp ever made.

THanks for all the input..... I really was thinking of an old ampeg head because i mostly play thrash and power metal, along with my heavier band Lillith...... I figured it would be able ot handle any of those.
Keep the input coming I want to get as much info as i can. Thanks......

I used to own a 8100 before it got stolen , pretty wicked Od2 channel, crap cleans though. The amp worked really well with a mahogany wooded guitar but sounded slightly thin with strats. Still really good though. Now i have a jcm 2000 dsl, much much better but a way different sound. The 8100 sounds very unique

If I don't buy an Ampeg or Marshall 8100 i may spend the time and TLC to build my own head (at least 100 watts)
Does anyone know where I can get the parts or even a decent kit ( to jump start off of) to build a good High gain tube amp.

I got a crate gx130c for pretty cheap, you can try one of those. A peavey transtube would be good too.

you can buy amp kits for cheap from http://www.madamp.biz/. I ve heard there really fucking good. If you want a tube amp it aint wise to get a 100 watt head. I made that mistake lol,
As for the 8100, it is a marshall valvestate amp. One tube in pre and ss power stage. Still good though. That amp seems to have such a different sound comapared to all the other valvestates. Oh yea, and it was ued by chuck schuldiner of death

8100 was also used by In Flames for Jester Race.

Well..judging by your first post, it seems like your gunning for a clean amp that loves pedals. One of the cleanest amps is a JC120. It's a solidstate, but has some GREAT cleans and can take pedals pretty well. Also, you can check out a peavey classic 50. good cleans on that as well and the OD channel loves boosts.
BTW, what exactly don't you like about your rx120? I tried one in a store last weekend and I thought the OD channel was nice and crunchy with plenty of gain.

it may just be my guitar (Washburn V with stock pickups, but just can't seem to get a heavy sound that cuts through but still keeps a good bit of the low end, If I boost the bass (8) and cut some of the treble (6) I can get a good sound but when I play with our drummer he completely kills it. and If I crank the volume on the head to be heard it overpowers the speakers and makes them rumble terribly.
although the Mid and contour I love they do there job very well for a low priced head.(when playing by myself)
Also I was looking around and saw a Rocktron Vendetta VH160R.It has built in AGX noise reduction and reverb, it has a 12AX7 in the overdrive channel and a solidstate clean channel with an active EQ......... Anyone have any oppinion on it.

100W tube is stupid loud. Even 50W is almost as loud. It's not a bad idea if you want absolutely no powertube breakup whatsoever though, just want all-clean headroom.
I wouldn't get the build it yourself kits. I mean for the 250 bones they cost, the enclosure, soldering iron/other materials and loads of patience you need to build that thing, you're extremely better off buying a real amp head. Plus noone here can tell you what it's going to sound like.
For under 400 bones I'd suggest some of the following:
Ampeg VH or SS-140C(macdaddy of high gain SS amps)
Ampeg VL series(high gain tube heads)
Crate Stealth series(similar to the Ampeg VL's, much cheaper)
Crate Blue Voodoo heads(all tube high gain)
Marshall 3203 Artist(30W all tube, very loud, extremely nice sound! This I have played)
Peavey Ultra(super brutal like the XXX, all tube around 400$ these days)
You might be able to score a Randall Warhead or Cyclone around this much too.

We're all talking about the older Crate Blue Voodoos that are out of production, whenever we talk about BV's for under half a grand. Everything he listed in his post as amps to get are all great amps.

Yeah, I got my Cyclone for about $350, if I remember right. Might have been $450. It was listed with damage to the footpedal stereo jack that needed to be replaced ( the picture showed the male jack had been bent badly ). Cost me about $4.00 and 15 minutes of solder time to setup and repair.
The Cyclone is a pretty badass Randall amp, but most times they cost a good deal of money.

Yes I've seen loads of Blue Voodoos -both new and old- sell for well under 400$.
I think I saw a modern BV-120 sell for 300 bucks or something on ebay, in practically new condition. And the old blue BV-60, 50, and 120 heads I've seen go for 180-250$, 300 tops.

Why does it need to be new? Whats wrong with used in great condition? The only reason I buy anything new is because I can't find it used.

Yeah screw new, I can't really think of any good reason to buy new, providing something is in good enough condition. Often guitars/amps will need tweaking to get them exactly how you want, so that money saved is put towards tailoring it to your needs.

BV's are no longer in production, neither are most(if not all) the amps I suggested, you can't find them new smartypants.

BVs are no longer in production...Damn you crate and your apparent lies
And i dont trust ebay anymore. I got a laney half stack with terrible problems, and it was a couple months worth of fedex problems...And even worse is the idea of not bieng able to play the amp before you buy it. Just throwin that out there, i would rather just take new, and tweak it myself.

Sorry you got burned on Ebay, but never buy an amp unless you have done your leg work and have tried the model before hand. Not unless you are absolutely sure it is what you want. Ebay is still your best bet for a great amp at a good price unless you can find one local.
Ebay is still a wonderful place to find excellent deals form people like me. I have never burned anyone. I list my stuff the best I can and will guarantee satisfaction. No one has ever bitched about me but I have read some horror stories about others.
