Yeah... I would imagen the EMGs have little or no dynamic range. There are pregains inside the EMGs right.
Is the Dimarzio Tone Zone single coil or humbucking?

tonezone is humbucking wich can also be split to singlecoils.

an X2N with a PAF Pro. you can get so many sounds out of that combo, especially if you have a 5 way switch to allow parallel wiring.

The X2N is a pretty cold pickup, not very versatile, it's super sensitive too not the dynamic kinda pickup that cleans up when you play softer, I don't think that's what he's looking for.

Oh, I didnt know he was refering to 1 pickup that is versatile. I was just recommending a versatile combo of pickups. I think you could get some killer cleans out of the pAF Pro in the neck and the distortion out of the X2N.

Definitely, but the X2N is useless for anything except brutal metal. The TZ does brutal stuff but is also more responsive to playing dynamics as it's quite a bit less hot, and it has a rounder sound with more bass and less highs, while the X2N is more shrill, not too much bass.
They're both awesome pickups though, it just really depends on the guitar and style of playing.

Yeah man , I definitely agree. I never tried the TZ but it sounds like a sweet pickup. But I'm happy with my X2N and have no desire to change my sound as of now. The X2N might not have lots of bass, but sometimes i use my amp to boost up a bit more lows and cut a little treble to give me a better overall sound when playing other things besides brutal metal.
yeah so Pungency, I would listen to the people who recommend the Tonezone. It sounds like a good investment

I've had both and with my taste I prefer the X2N, I just wish the one I have(white) didn't ruin the look of my guitars. Still don't know what guitar I'm putting it in, and which my Tonezone is gonna go in too.

emg's have HUGE range, but no dynamics. Theyre incredibly underwound so they can spit out a ginormus range of frequencies. Honestly, if you put some higher ohm pots in there (100k instead of 25k) you'll be VERY fuckin suprised at what they can spit out.

Wouldn't higher ohmage pots damage the EMG's?

This is something I've been wondering about, because I read that EMG's need EMG pots to function and I don't know whether you can change them around, do they make compatible higher Ohmage pots?? How would it affect the sound?

Higher ohmage pots would increase the frequency range of the EMG pickups, adding assloads of more treble presumably. I can only imagine that they would sound extremely harsh and trebly that is if they even function at all with high ohmage pots. They're active pickups, they need to use the pots they're designed to use.

It wont damage the pickups, but it will increase the magnetic current, and output... and trebel.
K, when a pickup is connected to the pot, the current goes 2 different places: some goes to the output jack, and some goes to the ground. Due to impedance, the ground basically "sucks" the current out, therefore weakening the magnetic field, and eating some of your trebel. As pot ratings increase, the amount of output increases, the amount of ground flow decreases.
If emg's were given more tame preamps, then there would be no need for the super low pot ratings, and they would have alot more frequency range to them.

So if you use a higher ohmage pots on the EMG-81 it will summon up a swarm of robot killer bees.

not necessarily, depends on battery power, amount of headroom, and how clean the preamp is. If you hook up 2 batteries in parallel, it should at least reduce any noise comin out... but konwing the quality of emg's, it will be noisy.
