orientation of trem springs

picked up an RG the other day w a low-pro trem. the guy i bought it from had it set up pretty bad, so i fixed the action and restrung w 12-56's in C standard.

the trem is sitting at the right height/angle now and the action is ok, but i'm wondering about the way he's set up the springs (pic). i looked around at some examples and this doesn't seem to be a typical orientation ... what is the optimal setup for my configuration? (i'd like it to stay in tune first and foremost).

my guess is that as long as the trem is straight, it shouldn't matter..i guess you could slide the one spring over so there are two on each end..but as long as they are all equally stretched, i don't think it matters. then again, i don't know shit about a lot of things.

edit...twin peaks is a pretty cool show. i gotta get copies from my roommate and start it from the beginning.

If that works then leave it. It looks fine to me as long as the bridge remains stable and level. At first, I expected to see a picture of the springs crossed

You could try moving the configuration around a bit to see what is better for you, but I don't think it will make a difference.

Some of the diehard Floyd guys here will be able to tell you more.

Never used that spring setup, looks like it would apply uneven tension across the bridge so it may tilt on a side it's not supposed to. If I were you I'd swap the center black spring one space to the left to even out the tension, then adjust everything/retune again and you'll be fine.

But hell if it stays in tune and the bridge isn't tilting in a funny way then keep it.

If it aint broke, dont fix it.
On my guitar with a trem, i use 3 springs, 1 angled diagnolly(sp?) on each side and 1 straight in the center. Like this: \ I /

Right now my springs are in a funky formation I saw Roope Latvala use.

Like this II\ Actually works!

I have have the same spring config on my 7 string, because they low strings pull on the trem more, so having an extra spring at that end helps even it out ... esp when you have freaken heavy strings on.

They should really be evenly spaced, so 2 either side with the gap in the middle, so the load is distributed evenly. The tensions involved are quite high.

That said, you probably wouldn't notice any difference, but how hard is it to even them out?

so i spaced them evenly w two on either end ... seems to stay in tune longer now ... thx for the input.

(edit. tried 3 spring configs and there wasn't enough tension bridge kept lifting up, so stuck w 4.)

Well, there's no best way, but to explain the situation with obvious physics.....

If all the springs are directed straight (parallel) then the tremolo has the most force acting on it. Having a sping in a diagonal position is less force. On my RG 270DX with a floyd, I can't remember what configuration I have now, but I recall I've swited between "III" and "/I\" If I have too much force on it, then I won't have as much wammy range.
