Aborted - Slaughter & Apparatus: A Medical Overture
Aborted - Slaughter & Apparatus: A Medical Overture

Menno: It is safe to assume that Aborted can be seen as one of Europe's most leading death metal bands. What started as doubtful grind project over ten years ago has grown into a melodic (but merciless) metal act. Many bands managed to disappoint numerous fans after such a development, but Aborted clearly is an exception. The band stays true to their gory roots and always makes sure that the melodies are accompanied by destructive grooves.
The record that'll hit the shelves on February 19th in Europe is another output of this successful formula. 'Slaughter & Apparatus: A Medical Overture' sets the count to five full-length releases and is a confirmation of the fact that Aborted wanders around at the international top. Aborted grasps and keeps the listeners' attention during eleven equally strong tracks. Sven and Sebastian grunt like no other and the songs are built on furious blast-beats and breakdowns played by Psycroptic drummer David Haley (session drummer, the spot is still available). The guitar-riffs are kept very audible and are always serving the songs and the entire groove of the record. The same can be said for the solos; the majority are melodic twin-leads. Add some sinister orchestra parts or macabre samples here and there, leave the mastering to the wonder of the buttons Tue Madsen, et voila; a masterpiece.
Personally I'm more a fan of Aborted's older stuff but, objectively, it's damn hard to write something negative about this album. Aborted has become an international standard and I believe that 'Slaughter & Apparatus: A Medical Overture' will get mentioned in many year-lists, including mine.
