Ive heard this genre name, but I have no idea what it is! I only have heard that Devourment plays this. Can someone tell me what exactly it is, its defining stylistic elements, etc? And maybe list a few similar bands if you wish so I can get a better idea too!

Not really sure but if you ask me its just probably a name that bands use to describe themselves like "Brulal slaming Death metal" or "Horror glorifying Death metal" etc.... Not really sure but its still Death metal to me.

Id recommend Crepitation, Soils of Fate, Vomit Remnants, Revenance(NY), Guttural Secrete (Artistic Creation through Cranial Stumps was more slam orientated, Reek of Pubescent Despoilment has some awesome slams and mixes in with CC style technical parts.)

Youngguitarist on here knows quite a bit about it all, I believe. Ive always thought of slam death as a reference to just slamming riffs so to speak.. Sort of like Dying Fetus on crack. Its hard to explain but you know it when you hear it.

Edit: and like most genres there is absolute shit as well as quality bands... its finding out the two thats hard.

I'd describe some if it as basically the Slipknot of death metal. Or in other words, taking all of the simple, easy elements of metal (like a heavy breakdown), and concentrating it into one little box. A heap of lazy, talentless guys cranking up their distortion, and cranking down their tuning, and chugging low-ass chords with "ree ree" vox; the only hint of talent is in the drumming. Basically an easy door to being called real metal. A prime example is Carnivore Diprosopus. Sure, it might be fun to bang your head to, but it's just, blah. Devourment, on the other hand, do show some good technicality; if it weren't for their slow, slam breakdowns, then I'd consider them straight up grindcore. The fast, grindy parts are just almost impossible to comprehend on record, but if you watch the guitarist live, it's some speedy fretwork. Some others are Insidious Decrepancy, Digested Flesh, Gutrot, Sect of Execration. Listen for yourself.

thats my understanding, metalcore with heavy death influences, ion dissonance has death metal influence as does psyopus, but they have roots in metalcore... not so much psyopus i guess but ID for sure

As far as I can tell it's just levels of obvious metalcore-influence.

There was only 1 cd where his vocals were good and that was the during first 4 tracks off Cranial Impalement, the rest of his stuff just dissapointed.
