Have you heard death metal without blasts? maybe some slow songs.

They're pretty good, but definitely not required. Some oldschool death metal doesn't have any blasts at all, but it still kicks ass.

Bomb blasts are way cooler, but it's really not needed.

Blast beats are the death and black metal beat.
They aren't essential to metal, but they kick ass.

Obituary, Death, Atheist and Martyr are four death metal bands off the top of my head that don't utilise blast beats much or at all.

this discussion is rather pointless, since we all came to the conclusion that they are cool but not necessary

Also Autopsy, Abcsess, Master, Necrophagia, Bloodbath, Cancer, Death Breath, Entombed, Dismember, Dissection, Ghoul, Grave, Hypocrisy, Macabre, Massacre, Mausoleum, Pungent Stench, The Ravenous, Zombie Ritual.
All Death Metal and all don't have many blast beats and some not at all.

death metal without blast beats is okey....but i will not call such songs for brutal death metal....like hypocisy (not the old ), the new stuff they have dosent include blastbeats
but if ur aiming to make brutal music, i would incorporate blastbeats...but i must say, i feel some bands overdo it...like hate eternal
When like 80-90% of the beats on an album is blast beats i think it gets boring, after a while the blast beats dosent sound blasting...sort of hehe

In Black metal I would say they are essential. Death metal drumming is a lot more varied and blasts are used a lot more sparingly. I've heard black metal songs where the drums maintain the blast beat throughout.
