Digital Recording not on a Computer...
I did search first but couldn't really find what I wanted. I'm thinking of quitting my band and going it alone Bathory style Basically I looked into getting a digital recorder a while back and there seemed to be some good stuff out there for around 150 pounds ($300) Korg especially. Anyway so thats a four/eight track that would take care of my guitar/bass/vocal recording and I can then load the finished product onto a computer in mp3./ .wav/ mp2. format. I already have a recording mic btw although I have no idea how good it is. That doesn't matter for the moment though. Mainly wanted to find out how easy it would be to get that finished track to interact with simple editing software and/or half decent drum programming software? I guess my budget would be pretty low though. Up to maybe 70 pounds ($140). Any suggestions? Thanks! James

Maybe that new Boss Micro BR palm digital multitrack recorder is worth a look.
But why don't you wanna record with a computer interface? They're much more easier to manage especially with drum tracks and stuff, and you can get the same if not better sound quality out of one of them. If you plan to use a mic I PARTICULARLY recommend one of those USB/Firewire interfaces cause they have built in mic preamps which will improve your recordings a bit.

Why would you want to record on a crappy digital record station, then put them on the computer to mess with? Why not record on the computer in the first place? Buy a remote control, map buttons to "record" and "stop", maybe even rewind, delete latest recorded track, etc and record. Costs 20 quid MAX, and you don't have to walk back and forth between your play spot and the computer. Then, get a good sound card, an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 + decent preamp or Delta 1010LT or similar is kickass for the price and sond quality is up there with the big guys like RME.. And get an SM57.. champagne tone, beer price.

Dude! What is that remote you're talking about? I've been long looking for something that'll do that, but I'm not sure it exists. Like can you map functions like record, stop, etc. in something like Cool Edit Pro, Sonar, Cubase, or Nuendo? Let me in on this stuff!
Better yet, instead of a PC soundcard + mic pre just buy something like an M-Audio Fasttrack Pro, Digidesign Mbox2, Presonus Firebox/Inspire, etc, as they have mic pre's and insanely better A/D converters.

Ok thanks guys. Well I can get the M-Audio Fast Track Pro for 137 pounds, but then I'd still need software/ Drum samples, would I still need to upgrade my PC soundcard because I bet mine sucks (computers about 3 years old). If you reckon that I could get it all for under 250 pounds then I might investigate it further...... I know theres quite a few similar threads kicking around here, looking at it all Cakewalk do a cheap Home Studio package and Beta Monkey do decent Metal Drum sample software.

Any remote? ;-) You buy like a device that accepts infared in, and use your existing TV / stereo remote or whatever, and map the keys in software (the software can also send midi events etc. to Sonar, Cubase or whatever)..
It's a LIFE SAVER. Seriously, no getting up, bend over the keyboard, three clicks, walk back, sit down, then play - just play, make mistake, two buttons on remote, play again.. hehe.

^ there's something, I'm not on windows so i dunno how it works :/ But on linux i can map keys on the remote to act just like keyboard input, and in windows i can only image it gets better, like keyboard / mouse / MIDI mapping
This is the software you want, i heard it KICKS ASS: www.girder.nl

The Fasttrack pro already comes with some software, and you can download whatever software and drum samples you want on the internet. For making drum loops I'm using Fruity Loops, but I hear Leafdrums is easier, but I have some good guides that will show you how to do most basic stuff for metal drums in FL so I haven't bothered with leafdrums yet much.
You don't need a new soundcard. I bought a Presonus Inspire(like the Fasttrack Pro, only Firewire and slightly cheaper) and my computer is about as old if not older. The soundcard is not going to have an effect on what you're recording, in fact you can record with the interface on any computer that doesn't even have a soundcard!
To record efficiently on a PC all you need is a decent recording interface and some software.
Any PC soundcard you can afford are for music/videos/media and games, not for recording.
