What isn't working about it? Can't really help you without more details. Make sure you start slow. Try to mute the strings you aren't tapping on using your other fingers. If you can't get the sound loud enough, you need to either push harder or turn up your gain.

It would help us if you specified the problem.
I'll try to help though.
I'll use this A minor tapped arpeggio as an example.
e --12--5--8--5--12--5--8--5--------
Start with your index finger on the fifth fret but don't sound the note yet.
Sound the note on the 12th fret with your right index finger by quickly tapping the string.
Now instead of just taking the right index finger off, PULL the string downwards so that the fretted left hand note is played loudly and clearly.
Next use the left little finger to hit the 8th fret hard so that the note is clear.
Then pull the little finger off downwards so that the note on the fifth fret is clear aswell.
Thats about as much of a basic and broken down description I can give.

Another thought.
Try practicing just 12--5--12--5--12--5--12--5
Keeping the 5th fret the same and using the right index finger by tapping firmly and pulling off downwards.
Also, tapping on an acoustic will help greatly when you get back on an electric.

Check your string action, they could be too low or too high. There are a lot of decent instructionals on youtube, search for "guitar tapping".

if your fingers arent working, you can always try doing it with your pick. try pulling this off:
e---12---19---14--
put your index finger from your fretting hand on the 12th fret. then use your pick and hit the 19th fret as fast as you can, while hammering away on the 14th fret with your middle, or ring finger.

Since the point of tapping has come up, I'd like to ask a sidetrack question -
I can tap pretty decent and fast and have built my technique largely around getting deft at muting the strings I'm not playing. I'm curious, is this the usual way or are you "supposed" to be able to play with zero lose string noise?

You're supposed to mute the other strings.
Also, it's a lot harder to tap when your strings are tight. If you're using a high gauge of strings, trying downtuning, it'll make your tapping sooo much easier.

humm...i got another question about tapping
i'm fairly new at tapping. been tapping for about a month or so, and can pull off some decent stuff. but i cant seem to get the tapping stuff sound right on the low E string. ive seen bands like Amon Amarth pull it off, and it doesnt sound like noise. yet everytime i do it(yes, i pull off towards the cieling) it just comes off as noise
any idea what i'm doing?

Does it play the note at all? Are you being careful to mute the other five strings that you aren't tapping on? If you're accidentally hitting the other strings, it'll create unwanted noise.

Dunno if this an issue for anyone, but generally you'll find tapping is better/easier/cleaner using the bridge pickup.

One thing I noted when I started out tapping was the fact that the thicker the string, the harder it is to do a pull-off without accidentaly hitting the string with the finger that did the pull. Make sure your fingers are only touching the string when you intend them to.

practice on your acoustic, first of all. but yeah, these dudes got you right man. the only thing i can add is, i pretty much always pulloff downwards. muting is the key here though, that's why you gotta practice with some volume too. don't be ashamed of the poo comin thru, crank it, and see what happens. use all of the advice these guys have told too...

i have turned up the volume, and can assure you that i'm not hitting any other string. it still doesnt sound right. but if i try it with my pick, it sounds a bit better. dont exactly know why
i'm playing it through a single coil, if that makes a difference

When you tap, pull on the string slightly as you come down on it to help it sound off.
