Best Sounding Metal Records

You ever heard an album that had what industry standards would call, shitty production yet you liked how it sounded? Me too, of course thats not the entire basis for this thread but thats a good way to explain to everyone that this isn't simply about great production value. It's about SOUND. Guitar sound, drum sound, bass sound, vocal sound or whatever other motherfuckin sound is on the record that just, well, sounds fucking great. I know you guys have records that stick out to you as sounding classic, or the kind where you wish that more metal records were like it. Post 'em.

The term metal is used loosely, hence why the Misfits are on this list but if you have a problem with that kindly suck my balls.

Here's a few that always stand out to me

Anthrax - Sound of White Noise/Stomp 442/Among the Living
Pantera - Far Beyond Driven
Slayer - Reign in Blood/Seasons in the Abyss
Black Sabbath - Master of Reality
Machine Head - Burn My Eyes
Deicide - Once Upon The Cross
Soilent Green - Sewn Mouth Secrets
Cannibal Corpse - The Bleeding/Gallery of Suicide
Opeth - Blackwater Park
Down - Nola
Metallica - Master of Puppets/Ride the Lightning
Obituary - World Demise
Megadeth - Rust In Peace
Death - Sound of Perseverance
SOD - Speak English or Die
Iron Maiden - Powerslave/Number of the Beast/Piece of Mind
Misfits - Static Age
Morbid Angel - Domination/Blessed are the Sick

I think you guys got the idea, feel free to elaborate as well.

Here's my picks.

Immolation - Here In After, Close to a World Below (many hate this sound, but it's my favorite)
Slayer - Seasons In The Abyss, Diabolus In Musica
Testament - The Gathering
Death - Symbolic, The Sound of Perseverance
Morbid Angel - Gateways to Annihilation
Beheaded - Recounts of Disembodiment, Resurgence of Oblivion
Enter My Silence - Sophia's Eye, Remotecontrolled Scythe
Cryptopsy - And Then You'll Beg
Gorguts - From Wisdom To Hate, Obscura (wonderful drumming and guitar licks)
Cephalic Carnage - Lucid Intervals, Exploiting Disfunction

And i just downloaded 2 Vader songs off slayme's site....the first Vader stuff i've ever heard, and both have a really awesome heavy fucking thrash sound....it's perfect for the style.

That's it! (of the ones i can think of now)

Metallica's Black Album- the production is just so fucking great!

Down 2- that awesome sludgy sound. possible the fattest bass sound ive ever heard

Slayer's Diabolus in music- the first time they tried i slightly different formula for recording guitars. bostaphs kick drum sound is just huge, the best ive ever heard

Pantera's Far Beyond Driven- just a huge-ass guitar sound like in 5 minutes alone

Steve Vai's Passion and Warfare-he made the guitar sound totally amazing

probly heaps more I cant think of right now. anyways, cool thread!

Opeth - Still Life, Blackwater Park

but on top of all;

Morbid Angel - Gateways to Annihilation.

one of the few albums i have got that just gets brutaler and brutaler the more i crank the stereo the sound doesn't deteriorate, and the 'oomph' feels as if the Ancient Ones of the Absu are about to come through the Igigi and devour my soul

(no...not really...but just keeping Morbid Angel's theme going )

I'd like to second PST's Divine Intervention and Wolverine Blues mentions.

I'd also like to add Napalm Death's Utopia Banished. That one had some of the shittiest production if you went by the modern standard like most of you kids do but it just sounded raw and badass to me.

Where's Katham so he can tell me how much post Enslavement to Obliteration Napalm sucks?

All right, I just deleted a lot of posts. Here's a few guidelines:

1. CKY is not to be discussed in this forum. We closed down the thread about them. They've been excluded from the entire forum, and therefore from this thread.
2. Misfits are perfectly acceptable. We left open the thread about them. They've been accepted by this entire forum, and therefore by this thread.
3. Clad in Shadows, shut the fuck up.
4. People pissed up by Clad in Shadows also need to shut the fuck up.

I dont want to see any more of your bitching, seriously. No more bitching from either side of the argument. I'll delete both.

There are probably thousands of places to talk about CKY, go talk about them there, because both sane and myself have decided that they are not a topic for here. If there's any dispute about what is and is not metal, leave it up to the moderators to sort out. Everyone understand? Good, now continue on with your best sounding METAL record thread.

Camp Kill Yourself, a punk band. Now, what did I just say about discussing them? Seriously, no more. Only talking about metal albums' sound starting... now.

loved that record from the minute I got it and I also like the guitar sound, especially the 'Nomad' guitar solo sound is good.

I have to say
Dimmu Borgir - Misanthropia (Hell, i can't remeber the whole name)

I know, i should help to get that a "black metal-free-zone". Although some people would argue if Dimmu is BM. But the production of this record is great.

I have to second memnoch's Gorguts and Immolation.
