Is there any free programs out there that'll play chords I choose, so I can solo and make up melodies over them.

If you want to take the legit free route, just download powertab. Yes you will have to figure out the timing and note durations to what kind of rhythm you want, but it's pretty easy to figure out. I use guitar pro, but it's not free (unless you pirate it), and it uses a realistic sound bank for instrument sounds. I love it and use it everyday to play rhythms I've worked out so I can solo to and compose melodies to.

It's hard to talk shit when it's free but the midi or whatever the hell is so bad. Pretty sick program though. If it sounded more like a real guitar it would be the shit. Does Guitar Pro sound like a real guitar? If so how much is it? Where can I get it?

Guitar pro sounds better than powertab. Much more features too.
