Amp Ventilation
Greetings metal heads,
In one recording session when I was playing my guitar I made a box around my guitar amp and mic. I thought that would make the sound better. Anyways after that session I dispensed the box because I got scared for the ventilation. My question is, was it safe what I was doing or it could it be hazardous to my guitar amp? It says on my amp manual that if the amp gets heated too much it has a power safety option that mutes the amp. That did not happen to me; so my amp is alright? Suppose the amp does get heated too much ; will the amp loose its power gradually or will it mute completely at that instance? If it does not mute the amp is working on full power?
Thank You Metal Heads!

If there's enough space between the box and amp's ventilation shafts, you'll be ok. Btw what are you using, cardboard boxes or something?
If you're just putting a box around the cabinet, you'll have absolutely no problem, as speakers don't really get hot/need ventilation. If you're doing it with a combo amp or an entire stack with the head(just leave the head out of the box, no?), then just make sure the box is a bit oversized and the heat will dissipate enough so there won't be any problem.
Plus, in order for an amp to get overheated, you really have to push it at a very high volume for it to get really hot. So no reason to get worried.

Yeah, good big amps are generally built to take quite a bit of pain.
When you do the box thing, use a material that isn't too insular if you fear that it will do damage.

i did this all the time with tube amps in a tiny basement studio. We basically laid particle laminate around the amps which we got from old cabinets... but as long as you keep the cieling of your makeshift box open, the heat can rise and get out of there.

How much particle board(thickwise) did you use to get satisfactory results? Did you box out the whole cab/amp or just make a "C shape" around the front? I may be interested in trying this.

I suppose you could compensate for the open bit by making the box walls tall, or punching holes in a roof.

on the amp i was using... a 60's fender champ, with the tweed covering... with a 1x10 cabinet hahahha...
the other amp was a 70's champ, silverface, which we boxed beside the bass amp on the other side of the room.
For the bass amp we used a line out (it wasnt tube so there was no point in micing it to hear the tube tone)
the particle board it was a half inch thick or so... we also threw some foam padding on the insides. And for setup, we had the amp against the wall... facing parrallel to the wall, and also facing away from the other amps, and then we miced it, and leaned the boards on the side of the amp, and infront... so it was kinda boxed into the wall...
we did this so we would have 1 mic for each amp, and the mic would only hear the 1 amp... makes mixing easier.
