slayer uses marshall jcm 800s with EMG's, preamps, and some pedals to get the appropriate amount of gain out of them.
As I Lay dying use Krank Revolutions and Krankensteins. Simple setup --> lespaul mudered by emg 85's --> maxon OD 808 --> overpriced, unreliable Krank
they are in entirely different ballparks bud, and i'd wait a few years until Krank steps up their game and actually make something that is built to last. Every band with kranks carry backups with them EVERYWHERE because they know of the shittyness, but have enough money to deal with it. I love the sound of Kranks personally, but hate the lack of versatility (2 channels, retardedly clean, and retardedly distorted, nothing in between) And i absolutely ABHOR their lack of decency and reliability and blatant disregard for functionality. Fuck, putting metal plates all over the amp and cab just make it heavy, and using a metal plate as a fucking speaker grille? what the fuck are they on? do they even WANT to hear the speakers?
And JCM 800's, they rock, and they're reliable but i wouldnt personally use it for metal. Not enough stock gain for me. I'll leave that to Zakk Wylde (who retubes his heads, and replaces his speakers) and the Slayer dudes.
This time i decided not to be a dick. But, slayer and as i lay dying advertise their amps pretty much every chance they get. DO YOUR FUCKING RESEARCH SO YOU REALIZE THAT YOU'RE ABOUT TO ASK A DUMB FUCKING QUESTION. That way people wont get mad
If you know this little, i'd wait a while before you get your parents to blow a load of money on an amp you clearly know nothing about. My tip, do some research, find a bunch of bands you like, check out their websites, go to their endorsements/links page for gear updates, look at live photos, read magazines, read reviews, all that. To put it simply, dont buy shit you know nothing about, it might be coated with acid and then you'll be trippin balls and wake up one morning realizing you've just been ass raped.
happy hunting

800 wont handle as i lay dying AT ALL. You need a serious high gain head... not an almost high gain head.

To be honest, trying to sound exactly like your favourite artist is pretty futile, the amout of processing that the sounds go through in the studio means that its nearly impossible. My advice: Try out a few amps at your local store and get something that give you a good tight sound. Providing that you have a fairly versatile amp under you you can always mess with your sound using EQ's and some overdrives etc, most of the 'tone' of an artist comes through his fingers and the settings. I'd bet that even if you bought the KK jcm800 you STILL wouldn't sound identical.

I definately don't understand why people get les pauls and put emgs on them. I'm not an anti-emg person by any means, but if you're going to carry around a heavy heavy fucking guitar thats completely mahogany and not use its wood characteristics? Phew.
Yeah i would recommend just going to guitar center and playing amps. Ask somebody their for their advice because they get hands on with the equipment all the time and can completely mold and shape the eq while you're playing and you'll find the tone and sound that fits you best.
I was sold on the blue voodoo because of this. He was just like if you want to play this kind of metal.. boom. If you want to play this kind.. boom. Going there and just half ass trying amps will definately get you something that you kinda want but more than likely there is somethin better.

Kerry's new 800 is much higher gain than the original. Probably has some integrated diode clipping(similar to an OD pedal) right before the tube gain stages. Or perhaps it has another tube gain stage althogether.
Regardless an 800 + good overdrive boost will kick your ass for anything-core.

It already has four stages of gain, you don't really need anymore than that, it's just about how much gain you want out of each stage. The magic lies in just taking a little gain out of each stage and balancing them out well to get a good thick clear distortion. The ENGL Powerball for instance also has four.. Anyway in the JCM800 there are lots of things that can be changes in order for it to kick ass. I'd might change the last stage to a plate follower with a 100k plate resistor, 1.5k cathode resistor and a 22uF cathode cap, and the 3rd stage to a 330k plate resistor, 220k grid resistor, 2.2k cathode resistor and 1uF cathode cap (a "SLO" type stage). Plus some other minor mods like grid resistors and capcitor swaps on the two first stages, and ex a 2.2k grid resistor on the power tubes would tighten it up alot.. Now it would sound alot like a Marshall/Mesa/Engl crossover..

Fuck, how much money/time would be necessary to do all those mods to an 800? Sounds interesting. You an amp tech or something?

time... depending on how good you are at soldering, and have a jcm 800 schematic, and know what it all means... 20 minutes to 2 hours.
but yeah, Jopop tell us more on how to turn half decent amps into full powered sex machines

Well some people like the looks, features, and feel of a LP, but they also like the sound of EMG's....

Sustain from the weight of the guitar is inherited in the strings, not the pick-ups. Tone and Weight are unrelated, but Sustain and Weight...believe me, I have a NT solid Maple guitar. Les Pauls ain't got nothin on me!

you forgot to mention neck joint, resonant frequency of the wood, and balance (ratio of neck weight:body weight).
Tone and weight are indirectly related --> the density of the wood has a part in determining the tone of the guitar. Higher density typically means brighter tone (because less chance of air pockets to resonate and give off warm tones)
Pickups DO INFLUENCE SUSTAIN. Honestly, compare a P90 to an EMG in a piece of shit guitar. The P90's volume will die off when the preamp in an emg will keep the note sustained due to the compression of the pickup. Also, high gain pickups will sustain longer than low gain because their volume is typically higher, and therefore you will hear the note for a longer time. And if you throw a high gain pup in a hollow body, it will feedback alot, but it will also sound like you have a compressor built into your guitar. The wood will keep resonating, which will shake the strings, which will then be read through the pickup... it will sustain like a mofo.
hows that maple gitter sound? i've never played a maple guitar... i want to try the new gibson SG made entirely out of flame maple though.

Bright as hell, had to turn the tone knob down quite a bit, and I only put treble at about 10 o'clock

Hollow body guitars are fun, but the feedback on them can get pretty fucking intense. They're definately fun also to play without an amp on just because of the pure volume you get out of them.

That's why they're mainly meant to play Jazz, Rock, lighter stuff. Not full out metal.

Derrrr. i know that hah. Some punk and ska too. (thats how i know and have played em)
My other guitarist in my old band used to use a semi-hollow body (one of those like thin ones, but stilla hollow body). Such a ballzy fucking tone. And then i got my "modded" explorer so i handed off my epiphpone les paul custom to him. Good times..... good times.

Don't forget rockabilly/psychobilly. My bro's coworker is the bassist for Speed Crazy, NJ-based rockabilly/harcore punk band, and the guitarist plays a semi-hollow body. I know them all personally, pretty big over here in Europe apparently, hence noone believes me when I say this.

I'm not a big billy fan but thats definately another type of music that uses hollow bodies and also stand up double basses.
