Noob question, help with picking method

I'm having trouble playing riffs of songs that have this particular picking method.

||----------------------------------------------|
||----------------------------------------------|
||----------------------------------------------|
||----------------------------------------------|
||--7-----7-----7---3---3-----3-6h-3p----------|
||----0-0---0-0---0---0---0-0------------------|

Whenever I try to play any notes that are set up as the opens are in the example I have above, the riff becomes choppy and I feel as if i'm missing a technique or something to make it sound smoother. Anyone have any tips for this?

It's likely that those open stringed notes are meant to be palm muted. And they should be picked in a fast Down-Up motion (almost like galloping).

These sort of riffs I believe are refered to as pedal tones. Try practicing some easier patterns similar to that, strict alternate picking with no deviations to a metronome. Start off the tempo fairly slow and work it up as it becomes redundant, and you will have them down in no time.

That's from funeral thirst isn't it?? Just keep practicing over and over and you'll find something that works. If you're a beginner you NEED to learn that whole song, the solo is pretty easy to pick up.

practicing strict alternate picking is perfect for these types of riffs. I always used alt picking when practicing scales, so adhereing my technique to these riffs took some tweaking but once you got it down, you'll be both impressed at how easy it is and how cool it sounds.

A riff from "The Haunted's 'Chokehold'" may also serve as a learning tool:
Code:
Riff C |------------------------------------------------------------------| |------------------------------------------------------------------| |------------------------------------------------------------------| |------------------------------------------------------------------| |----7---7----6---6----7---7-----------7---7----6---6----7---7-5-8-| |-00---0---00---0---00---0---131413-00---0---00---0---00---0---3-6-|
