Band Problems
Ok hears the thing. Recently started a band with a few mates, me on lead, mate #2 on 2nd lead and mate #3 on drums (We dont have bassist or singer yet).
When we are playing lead, i cant hear my solos over his amp and vise versa. its getting really annoying and it just makes us sound n00bish. Im using a Marshall vs232 with a Boss ME-50, Behringer EQ and Noise reducer and my mate is using some laney lg (not exactly sure) and an ME-50 also.
Any suggestions?

Hey, pretty much all bands have this problem. To overcome it you both just need an overdrive/ Booster pedal to increase your volume and preferably mid frequencies to cut through on the solo sections. If you don't want to colour your sound too much then just use the EQ pedal, increase the level (volume) and set it for increased mids. This will sort the problem.

Apart from putting an overdrive/EQ line boost in front of the amp input(if you really need it, not necessary), you need a volume boost/EQ change so that leads will cut through. A failproof way to do this is to keep the EQ in your FX loop and keep the volume level on it higher than normal, and set up the EQ like a parabola(like a mountain). Your leads will cut through the mix and sound a lot better.

An overdrive/boost isn't going to give you a volume boost the way an EQ pedal will in your amp's effects loop. OD's aren't meant to go in the FX loop.

Haha yea, you both pretty much said the same thing in different words.
Find a way to boost your mids, and volume levels, to get your solos to cut through the mix (live atleast). In the recording process when solos are done, a lot of people dont boost the volume on the lead too much, they lower the levels of the other instruments.

I know this doesn't help the thread...but mids play a big part in soloish sounds? at least that is what it sounds like...

for my solos, i switch channels over from crunch(2) to lead(3)(i have them eq'ed to sound pretty much the same, despite chan.2 have 2 tubes, and chan.3 having 4) and what i do is decrease bass, increase mids, very very slightly increase trebel (dont want those high notes shattering eardrums) gain boost, and slight volume increment. Now, dont just look at the increments, i do this to sterilize the lead channel.
My tone is pretty warm, and a lead from chan.2 wouldnt pop, it would just be unclear and kinda bland. So with chan.3, i make voice the eq to make higher notes pop out, whereas my rhythm tone is more voiced towards the lows. An increase in mids helps the low strings sound clearer when they play higher up on the neck.
Basically, voice your lead tone to favor those higher notes.

Mids are the life blood of lead tones. They make them cut through, can add a nice vowel like quality, and really help them sing.
