Uhm, what kind of line6 amp? For instance, my line6 podxt hooks up to the computer with a USB cable, so I just plug that in and open up my recording software (audacity).

if it has a lineout/headphone jack, what you wanna do is get an adapter from big jack to tiny jack, and run the little jack into your microphone plug. If you dont have GOOD recording software (not audacity) it WILL sound like shit. Use something with USB.

Audacity works perfectly fine. The problem you're having is your sound card. Most people that spend time recording to their computer end up getting a better sound card. Chances are good that yours isn't designed to accept the signal coming from your amp, and there are better soundcards that are much better at taking in that signal without clipping it all to hell.

Yeah invest in one of those external soundcards/USB(or Firewire) recording interfaces. You'll be spending between 120-200$ for a good one. The Line 6 Toneport UX1 or UX2 are some of them but you can find better ones in the price range.
