tokai ---- good fender and gibson ripoffs for cheap
eastwood ---- canadia REPRESENT!... vintage remakes which are typically better than the originals, everything i've tried has been amazing build quality
ampeg ---- yes they have a single guitar, and its quite awesome... overpriced though... if i was rich i'd buy 2.
Kramer ---- gibson owned company
Hagstrom ---- built nice, look... different
Yamaha ---- love their stuff, everything i've tried has been incredible for the price.
First act ---- cant say much about them, but they have an interesting artist roster (kelly clarkson, ministry... mastodon?) and very interesting custom shop gallery.
Gretsch ---- Probably makes the most expensive standard guitars out there, their white penguin (gold plated everything) going for around 4-5000 USD. Have lots of cheap stuff too like their duo jets. I want a duo jet double cut w/bigsby and a white penguin... i'm guna have to wait a few years and win the lottery though...
then some vintage companies i wouldnt entirely recomend if you want something durable... they look cool and sound... different. My friend is getting a tiesco to play in an indie/electronic/circuitbending/pure crazy band.
Mosrite
Tiesco
Univox

Agile guitars make some really nice Les Paul copys. Nice quality and finish and they sound very good. A friend just got an AL-3000 flame top. I was actually surprised at how good it sounded.

I'm currently toting a Yamaha, picked it VERY cheap for a beginner guitar and it sounds very decent for what I paid for the amp and guitar.

They're essentially the japanese LTD line of ESP, except they use high quality wood/hardware. Like OFR's, SD pickups, ebony fretboards, etc... Very nice guitars that don't get a lot of attention, but you can order them directly from Japan.

I bought a Godin guitar a while back because of the great quality rice ratio, and in the last few years they've started putting out guitars with EMGs and flatter necks, thinner bodies... again for a good price and good quality.

washburn? i personally dont like them because the neck is too thick for my hands, and they feel blocky to me, but i know people who live by them. They make good hollow bodies for all the psychobilly types.

I'm still jammin' on my original Samick daily. Real nice considering how seldom they're seen or mentioned. The Greg Bennet Samicks are really nice too, and they look twice their actual price most of the time. There's this other brand (totally forgot the name) that seems to completely rip off Ibanez RGs. The body dimensions look nearly identical, the neck feels just like a Wizard II, usually has the floating bridge (licence Floyd Rose), and HSH setup (common on RGs). But for a rip off, this is actually a really good quality guitar.

MOST MIJ's from 15,20,30 years ago are gold. A few have been mentioned, but they shit over say MIM fenders these days.
Charvels and Kramers, awesome guitars, and are very much appreciated by the right people. Not many beginners own them, so I would say they are overlooked. On the same level as some lower end kramers and charvels, are older B.C. rich superstrats. Very cheap, yet decent. Ofcourse, most of these guitars need new parts most of the time.
Hamer make awesome guitars, cant forget them.
But yeah, I cant get enough of going to second hand guitar shops and playing obscure jap's. Not so much for metal, or even shredding, but some lovely pieces of wood.

Indeed! I have a neckthru Model 5 FX Made in Japan from around 1987 (black with H and slanted S config and Schaller Floyd). The neck is a tad thicker than your average Jackson or Ibanez supershredder but the thing has character, it's just built for legato playing! I don't play any shred though. Just technical DM or grindy stuff on it, hence I'm putting the EMG from my Ironbird in it and putting Dimarzios in my Bird cause I enjoy playing leads more with it. The fretjob on it is fucking HUGE though, and it sustains for eons.
