Help with Home/Garage mics

im looking for a small microphone set up to jam along with my amp so i can hear myself and also for the occasional garage jamming, but i have no idea where to start. i searched on here but it was more people asking an opinion on which mic was better and that doesn't help me. honestly i don't even know waht mics hook up to to be amplified, so if anyone could point me in the direction of a budget mic(and whatever they're amplified by) pacakge i'd appreciate it

There are two basic types of mics. Condensor and Dynamic. Well... there are more but those are the two most widely used mics. Try reading stuff on how those two work and how they sound, and maybe that will help you find the mics you are looking for.

There are lots of mics with different sounds, pickup patterns, and shapes and sizes. Its hard to say which ones you may like, but Just go with something simple. My first mic I bought was a radio shack brand. heh.

Try maybe a Shure SM57

Mics are not amplified. They just do their job. The only power needed for a mic to work is phantom power or 48V. And that is only for condensors.

BUT, the signal from a mic needs to be amplified. You can do that by buying a mic pre or a recording devise that has one built in it. Like one of those 8 track recorders.

Ok I think we are a little confused here. A mic does not amplify anything, you do not use one in your garage to hear yourself better, you buy another cabinet for that. A microphone (I cant believe im defining what a microphone is) is used to pick up your guitar/vocals/drums for recording purposes. Got it?

To be overheard or heard altogether, i'd be thinking about buying a newer, louder, better amp. Mics are only used for recording the sounds coming out of your guitar cabinet and for live sound reinforcement.

Well you forgot the MORE important reason for having a mic, for vocalists! Der. It picks up the sound coming from something sends it somewhere else to get amplified then sent out to speakers. Recording does the same thing except something is "copying it" at the end.

I think the guy wants mic his amp, running it into a mixer into a powered PA speaker. That'll help him be "overheard", but that kind of solution is best for playing live/at venues, most venues have that kind of gear available so why are you gonna buy it yourself?

You need a bigger amp.

I knew it. I had an idea thats what you meant.

This is what i did.

I would go on ebay and get... an sm58 mic and get like 2 12inch speaker cabinets by Kustom with stands. You should be able to find this on ebay for pretty cheap or even new from musiciansfriend. Now all you need is a powered mixer. I suggest a crate or peavey one. Just something like 150 watts or so should be enough for you. Maybe like 6-8 channels. They can be had for around 200 bucks.
