A good alternative to the Firebox and Digidesign MBox is the Lexicon Lambda. Essentially the same as the Lexicon Alpha Studio USB. It's a bigass box that has 8 ins, a total of four mic preamps! It uses 2 USB ports, to record 4 tracks at once with little-no latency depending on how you configure your drivers. Costs 300 bucks(less in the US probably), so its designed to comete with the Mbox and Firebox.
Firewire interfaces are faster and require less configuration to get less latency, BUT they take TONS of resources on your computer so unless you're sure you computer is really fast and can take all that processing power, I'd suggest a USB interface.
However if you plan to record exclusively using lots of realtime effects like VST plugins(preamp simulators, cabinet simulators, reverbs, etc. like in Guitar Rig 2, Amplitube, etc.) then go with Firewire.
As you can see I've done tons of research on interfaces. It's taken me a few months to find one under 300 bucks that isn't gonna be shit.
