Im looking to gain a deeper knowledge in the types of metal there are example gothic, death, black and so on could you please list the tipes and define how you know the difference and maybe give me a band name next to each defenition.

gothic metal is great! its generally keyboard heavy, with piano, violin maybe, etc. it has a moody, depressed slow sound, but it still is catchy and pleasant to hear. the BEST goth bands you will find is type o negative and old theatre of tragedy.

black metal is uses death metal guitar riffs, with heavy fast drumming, and the singer will usually scream. also, keyboards are used heavily in many of these bands.......best example: dimmu borgir

death metal- 90% of this stuff is garbage. so many lame ass bands that just use downtuned guitars with a growler. the only two pure death metal bands i like are Obituary, they are great, with very original vocals. plus i am pretty sure they are the most commercially successful pure death metal band ever........and then, Cannibal Corpse. they are very gory etc, but they actually sound good........

power metal- read Hammerfall or Blind Guardian lyrics, its almost as funny as Anal Cunt lyrics.......... check out stratovarious and iced earth

progressive metal- some of the best metal there is. its catchy, and very diverse in its songwriting.......check out dream theater (they are the masters) and newer amorphis.........

no way, pete steele is HUGE........he could kill any of those band members with one punch.......and theatre of tragedy used to have like 7 guys, so they coulda whooped em!
