So I want to pimp my cheap, but sweet gtr...

...by putting good bridge hot pup. My first choice was Di Marzio x2n, but as distributer in my area will get next shipment in march, I can't fucking wait, as I have money and I am will to spend it right NOW.

So, they have DM Super Distortion and Evolution, I mean they have plenty others pups of DMs, but these 2 is what I'm interested in.

Gtr has agathis body( don't try to turn me off for this, it's my first gtr, memories, memories, and I want to pimp it, it plays fuckin good), and sound I'm looking for is not too bassy nor middley nor high, but I want fucking vintage sound, that cuts through mix well. Now, Evo exactly does that, but it has modern sound, and SD has vintage sound but it's a little more bassy. I am looking for some sound not to be brutal like some contemporary bends, I want it to be crisp, full, cutting, dinamic, yet a little raw( note: I am well aware of the fact that my gtr wood ain't jack pot, so concetrate on pups), hints: Death's last album( I know Chuck used x2N, if someone want to sa that), Morbid Angel's Covenant( especially songs like Lion's Den, God and Word of shite) and maybe, just maybe Suffo's Souls to deny in some parts. Which of these two pups is closer to that sound?

It's fuckin obviously that I want high output pup, but not at any price, I want to retain clarity, I want that others can hear what I play, mistakes also. Evo is brilliant but dunno...and yes, I'll buy only Di MArzio as there is discount for them like some 40%, so I want to use that.

Cheers

Ur Ra

Here's what to do. Go to http://www.dimarzio.com/. Select Pickups, humbuckers, then the output you want (sounds like you'd want either high power or vintage) and then select some pickups and go to sound. They have sound clips there. I personally like the Evolution better.

Um, I wanted u to help me to choose Super Distortion or Evolution. I did that on Di Marzio's site of course, but they didn't put any extreme metal oriented clip, didn't they? Jus' plenty of hard rockish shite.

Super Distortion is vintage and has higher output, but I am still undecided as Evo is said to cutt extremelly well through the mix, and I need that because I play live. I am undecided, I need u to help me to solve the mistery, what to choose?

I am going to buy pup tomorrorw after work or day after that, so I need quick and good replies, pros and cons. Thank u in advance

Sup HJ.

The Evo is geared mostly toward lead guitarists(Vai, duh ). Behemoth use Evo's in the bridge of their 7 strings(maybe 6-strings too), and they sound raw and grindy, very clear though not very sterile and modern sounding like active pickups, and of course scream for leads. They're very sensetive, they have a slightly scooped mid frequency response which may make it a bit squeely and noisy if you don't watch your EQ(ie: bogging down presence/treble slightly)

Super Distortion is probably less versatile, but will nail any brutal DM stuff you'll ever want to pull off(Suffocation use them in the bridge pos.). Not so great for leads but a different neck pickup will solve that problem. It's still an awesome pickup though.

But neither of those will nail decent clean/low gain sounds(less you coil split). Except maybe the Evo 2 which responds differently when you roll down the volume knob on it, that one will sound better in lower gain situations as it has a little less output than the original evo(but is still pretty hot).

You should also take the Tonezone into consideration, it has the same output as the Evo 2. I had one in a crappy old guitar(probably agathis too) and made it sound a million times better, it actually gave it a bass response that the guitar didn't have before. It's all bass and mids but it doesn't get muddy at all, it's super hot but it's not trebley like most other Dimarzio high output buckers, pretty good all around and responds well when you roll down the vol knob, making it sound more like a JB.

Oh and it KILLS for leads too, like tapping and legato and stuff, it picks up all your picking dynamics. It sounds very "brown" if you know what I mean(Van Halen).

EDIT: neck is from maple, rosewood fretboard.

Thank u MAB mate

Well, I don't know where u have heared that, but that may be the truth for Hobbs( dunno) but Guy uses 81 and SD Distortion. Anyway, I don't want to buy something just because of hype, so I said to what sound I want to get closer to.

As for lead/rythm sound, I am mainly concerned with good rythm sound, I am no shreder, I solo fast, but doesn't wet my pans with malmsteen or vai or angelo, bands do that for me. I mean, I like good shreding, but I don't judge some song by how solo is complex or something like that( for ex. 'oh, man, just listen that song 'Sweet Lovin' with pandas', solo is so ficking hard to play man, I love it', or some crap like that, lol).

Tone Zone doesn't have needed output( I want it to be over 400 min)

And that guitar has pretty good bass response too.

EDIT: just to be said, if is Evo 'guilty' for Vai's riythm sound, then I don't like it at all, too clean, sterile, flat characteristic

I like it rough and raw baby

Dragonforce uses Evo's in their necks and bridges, so check them out. Are you only replacing the bridge pup? You might want to check out DiMarzio Air Nortons as well (good in the neck).

Haha then I guess the SD is for you, it's as raw and brutal as you can get, without sacrificing clarity with an Invader or taking the extreme transparency of an X2N. You could check out Bareknuckle Nailbombs but I doubt you're willing to spend 200 euros on 1 pickup.

The tonezone is really hot though, don't be fooled, there's no gigantic difference between 375mV and 425mV(SD), the difference will be like 1.5cm on your gain knob.

@4d5e6f: Well, Dragonforce are bunch of positive wackos, but their rythm tone is...pffffff ( for me), like any other power metal, they have weak guitars, but that is most because of production, so u really can't tell by hearing them.

I have H-S-S combination so it's not possible. But, at the moment there is discount for like 40%, so I may end up buying one more pup

I am only changing bridge, it's cheapo guitar anyway.

Lavabug (haha, ol' habbit), as I said, there is a discount here, otherwise I think i'd go for Invader.

PPl, could u tell me please( but only if u have had experiences) overall sound of these pups( for Tone zone too, there; ) ) in a way, what frequency is dominant and so? Does ( certain pup) cut well through the mix?
For what is( certain pup) the best?...and that kind of things.

Is SD good with tapping, sweeps and so?

EDIT: What do u mean transparency( what's that), Las Palmas boy?

The Tonezone is a Dimarzio pickup!

I had a tonezone in my old crappy Ironbird, sounded great, now I'm putting a Tonezone and PAF Pro in my current NJ Ironbird, and putting the EMG-81 it has in my Charvel(cuz I don't play much lead on it Later I'll get an EMG single coil for it too, cause I want it to look uniform). They do anything from good cleans to straight up Suffo. Probably the most versatile humbucker Dimarzio makes, because most of the rest are either too hot for good cleans or simply not enough for death metal.

By transparency I mean that it doesn't color the sound, the X2N a cold pickup, not warm or excessively bassy(doesn't mean it's not excessively br00t3l). It's probably your best bet for tight grind without sacrificing your picking dynamics with an EMG. Plus you like Schuldiner right? I had it in my JS30KE and I loved how it sounded, awesome for screaming leads and brutal riffs, super clear and super dynamic, awesome for everything but cleans.

You could get a Dimarzio Fasttrack single coil in the neck too later on, I would really suggest this if you're going with a less versatile pickup like the SD, X2N, or Evo just to have more variety available. But it also works super well with the Tonezone especially if you split them all for a very authentic strat sound.

I know TZ is DM pup
But agathis body gives to guitar bassy sound, so I don't think it would be clever to put bassy pup in bassy wood, ur bird is probably from basswood or so.

My bird is chesswood, which is actually a fake name for a random un-tagged wood taken from piles of wood remaining from the manufacturing of other instruments. It has good sound characteristics, a lot like mahogany, but doesn't weigh much.

Basswood is far bassier than agathis. And many people use TZ's in their basswood RG's.

I never said that. The Tonezone is also used by many people in mahogany guitars, particularily Gibsons. I don't see anyone complaining about excess bass/mud.

what kind of amp are you packing/ plan to pack. That might help with defining your mud definition.

Deed is done, I bought Evo today. SD was sold day before me entering the shop

I am going to install it and see how it's work.

Anyway, if I see it's not good per my taste, I will give it to a friend( sell it) and try TZ if it will be in store

I am using Valvestate 100W btw.

d00d I told you I had one in my old guitar and it sounded awesome. Plus if its going into my lovely Ironbird, you can automatically assume it's a kickass pickup by my standards(after all I wouldn't ruin my favorite guitar with a pickup I don't like. ).

Well, I'm awaiting cash to arrive( something about January 15th) and then will take gtr to the tech to change strings, gauge( going to 11s) and to do full setup, plus to install TZ. Then I will report

Finally, I got it installed. Doods, I think it's safe to say that TZ is pretty good pickup. I found it it's not muddy a all, big, fat, punchy tone, 'rocks the house'. I suggest you to buy it, but I dunno how it will act in other woods...I adore those milky lead and 'sweep' sounds...I didn't regret a bit

Next days shall be the final judge, but atm I think it's awesome.

Fak yea

It has enough 'gain' and those fast palm muted tremolo runs( ie Slayer, Death, MA) sound so full and focused.

If you do harmonics a lot or find it to be a tad less sensetive in the lead department, raise the little allen screws on the treble strings a bit(particularily G the most), that helped a lot and it sounded perfect all over the fretboard.

I think I'm gonna buy one of those "solder it yourself" kits and the 2 pots I'm missing and wire up the TZ and PAF Pro into my Ironbird myself.

Thanks for that tip, I think I'll give it a shot. :P

As for soldering on your own, if you unsure in your capabilities in that department, don't do it.

Haha don't worry I've seen my brother do it many times and I know the wiring of my gtrz pretty well so I think I'm brave enough to do it myself now. Just need the kit to experiment first then I'll give it a whirl. It's not like I can get zapped from wiring a guitar wrong, unless I ground the electronics in an EMG guitar, that could be dangerous.
