Check out a Boss MT-2 or a Boss MD-2.

Depends on what sound you want. Do you want a boost?
Have a look at:
Pro co Rat's
Electro Harmonix muff's
Boss DS-1
Ibanez/Maxon tubescreamers.
Where in Australia you from?

If you want to add to your amp's current distortion, try the pedals INH suggested. Screw all the "metal" dist. pedals, they're all garbage.
If you want 100% of your distorted tone to rely on a pedal, either buy a new amp or buy and run a preamp you can afford into your current amp, preferably into the FX loop return to bypass the amp's preamp.
Such as:
Sansamp/Tech 21 Tri-AC or GT2(preamp in a pedal type thing. FUCKIN awesome. 150-170$ ish)
ADA MP-1 - (100-150$, 2-tube MIDI-compatible preamp)
Boss preamps(there are a ton out there, solid state, fairly cheap).
Rocktron Rockmaster(100-150$, high gain tube preamp, awesome).
Rocktron Chameleon 2000(high gain digital preamp, pretty cool, Arsis used one. 120$!)
Behringer V-Amp 2(100-150$, digital sounds pretty friggin ace, ignore all the trash-talk about it).
Digitech preamps(200$+, probably not in your price range so fuck that)

Bah thats it! I was trying to think of a good distortion pedal and I totally forgot about the Tech21 stuff. Probably your best option if you are going to be relying solely on a pedal for distortion. Id personally go with the Tri AC.

Word. The GT2 is good shit too, the Tri-AC is essentially the GT2 but with 3-channel switching(convenient for live playing or on-the-go switching). Oh yeah and the GT2 doesn't have a Mid knob, but you can still tweak the sound a lot anyway. They both work for bass too.
They sound awesome and they're so convinient I would almost buy one(a GT2) myself for direct recording and for practice if I had a combo amp to run it through(as running it into my tube stack would be silly). I may be buying an Ampeg SS-70C(1x12" combo version of the VH140C!!) so that may not be happening, oh well.
The Tech 21 XXL is a different story though, that's just a straight up analog dist. pedal a lot like like the Visual Sound Jekkyl and Hyde pedal. Sounds ok but it's not meant to be 100% of your grind, especially not in an extreme metal situation.

The Jekkyl and Hyde is pretty dope, I would buy one but it would be pretty unnecessary since I just bought a Powerball.
Although I did just snag a Keeley modded Boss SD-2 so whatever.

Nonsense. Most of the pedals/preamps I suggested will pull off everything up to straight up brutal death metal.
If you have the cash get the Sansamp GT2 or Tri-AC pedals, or if you don't care if it's not in pedal form, get a Rocktron Rockmaster tube preamp or Chameleon 2000. The ADA MP1 is also a cheap tube pre, but not as high gain as the Rockmaster or Chameleon(get's fairly grindy).

Try out a digitech death metal, df-7 or metalmaster. You will like, I promise.
