Well no one can recommend anything to you until we know what kind of music you play and what kind of amp you play through.

EMGs have great metal sound but not-so-great cleans (though if you turn your volume knob down on your guitar to cut out some of the signal it's not that bad). Some argue they sound too samey since because they're actives they don't colorize your sound with your guitar's wood type, but this isn't necessarily a bad thing. I like them a lot.

What kind of metal do you plan on playing/what kind of tone do you seek?

The Jackson RR3 has a Seymour Duncan JB and a Seymour Duncan Jazz pickup in it, doesn't it? I'm pretty sure most people here feel those are great pickups for metal. What amp are you using? Maybe you should look into getting a different amp rather than making permanent changes to your guitar (for new pickups you'd possibly need to get it re-routed).

I use 3 different type of of pick ups in the bridge position and 2 models for the neck position. The Dimarzio Super3's, BLUSA, Dimebucker in the bridge & a Dimarzio PAF Pro and Duncan 59' in the neck. Most of my guitars are loaded with Dimarzios Super3's and PAF. The Super3's are Dimarzios 2nd highest output pup next to the XN2. I love these pups... they have a nice darker tone, the bass response is very nice on them, the mids & treb are good and they aren't too harsh. And make a great combination with the PAF Pro. With the Super3 I play(ed) anything from Whitesnake to King Diamond... so its very versatile but again this pup reacts a lot with the type of guitar you have... Type of woods, if the axe has rear electronic (full body) or front electronics/pickguard (strat like). Most of my Fender Talons are front loaded and they sound killer with these.

Another one that I use in the bridge position is the Bill Lawrence L-500-XL. Both my Dean FBD and Fender HM strat are loaded with the BLUSA and a Duncan 59'. The BL is an agresive pup but it aint to everyone's liking. I didnt really like it when I first used it but it grows on you. You will have to change a lot of your settings with this pup.

On the Dimarzio website they have a pickup selector program you can look into. Ask's you a couple of questions and directs you to what you could try out. But don't base your final purchase on that alone. The program on the site say's the Super3 isnt for my axe, but funny thing is that it was designed for that guitar from the get go! They just changed the name of it later on, after Fender discontinued the Talon models.

H.

UPDATE :

Got myself an XN2 and should load it up this week!! i'll post an update.

Harry.
