Solos for beginners?

Hey Metaltabbers, do you think you could recommend me some songs with solos that are suited more for beginners or intermediates? Some stuff that is easy to pick up and that will serve as a gateway for me to learn the more complicated stuff. Thanks in advance.

Well you should state what music you like. There has definantly been threads on this in past, search it.

Anyhow, I can't really be fucked stating many so i'll just state 3 bands from different genres.

Metallica, Emperor, Anata.

Whoa, I've never even heard of Anata. I actually did search for this very topic and only got six results, none of which were relevant. As for what type of music I like I enjoy all forms of death, thrash and heavy. And some black.

just learn whatever solo you like, dont limit yourself to easy solos to begin with, also try hard stuff, it will push you to learn stuff. same is for song, some peolple ask fotr easy song to start with, il always tell them the same thing, dont limit yourself cuz you think your not good enough, technically you can play anything you want, alsong as you try it.

also for solos, start slowly, learn to play the notes of the solo correctly before you try to get the speed down. that has always worked for me, once you get more familiar with playing solos etc youll learn them pretty quick.

The solo in Open Face Surgery - Cryptopsy is pretty easy if you can sweep but otherwise stay away from Cryptopsy

Alot of Carcass solos are easy, mainly off Necroticism.

Edit: I remember the solos from Obituarys Cause of Death album were quite easy, if only because they had alot of melody to them and could be remembered.

Why is that a surprise to you?

Well, you'll like Anata. They released a new album this year, called 'The Conductor's Departure, but they've got an older (IMO better) album called 'Under A Stone With No Inscription'. Check em out, they can get boring but you'll like em, they're melodic death. This site doesn't have too many tabs of them, try www.riversofgore.com aswell for more (better ) tabs.

Geez I really don't know dude. I mean, playing guitar, and listening to the music you enjoy, you should be able to distinguish what is at your level (or just a tad above) and go for it.

Good luck

thats funny, openface surgery solo is the first solo i ever tabbed and im having more trouble playing openfacesurgery solo correctly than playing all solos from slit your guts correctly, or even soar and envision soar vision solo...

slayer's war ensemble solo was the first i really mastered and seemed quite easy. it has a mix of techniques, eg. tapping, scale type patterns, chords, bends and such at a reasonable pace.

New megadeth solo's (not when they had Marty (rust in peace)) like maybe Sweating Bullets or She-Wolf
If you wanna learn patterns for solo's, but not the speed, play some Death (the verses, dont worry about actual solo's) Like, flesh and the power it holds and shit.
Even before that, just screw around with the penatonic scale...but dont make it every song....unless you really like metallica
Slayer solo's dont have anything close to a scale in most, so, if you have a whammy, go for them.
You could always just look at malmsteen tabs to find basic patterns as well.

hey dude I don't know how long you play or how good but pretty much all songs on the album louder than hell have shredding patters just at lower speed than normally you would hear it,so if you play around 3 years this should be for you,but....if you want really simple solos some amon amarth, best choice for not so good guitarrists yet

So very true. I'm pretty much a beginner, but a couple weeks ago I decided to go for the suicidal task of trying to learn some Decrepit Birth. I've practiced Prelude to the Apocalypse over and over and pretty much have it down pat. Now just about anything else I try has become easy. I've probably improved more in the last two weeks than in the six months total I've been playing.

I know you've asked for examples of songs, but it's raining here in shitty England so my uni bus hasn't shown up, so pretty bored and thought I'd type this shite:

The best way to learn/develop is to just find an experienced guitarist who can feel the things they're trying to explain, but good luck in finding one that isn't an arogant aresehole!

Seriously though, find some experienced players and ask them for some brief tuition and pointers; ask to be shown a few simple scales and how to play them along one string, such as through pedalling/dotting the intervals of a scale along the high e string. It's cliché but here's an example I've posted lots, using 'A Harmonic minor'

e-0-1--0-4--0-5--0-7--0-8--0-10--0-12--then back down etc

The double spacing is just to make it easier to read, but play them at equally spaced notes focusing on consistent and well formed up/down strokes.

Once you've got a basic feel for where those notes are, begin applying them to backing tracks etc, though if I'm honest and speak from experience, it's probably more beneficial to begin learning solos etc outside of death metal, as a lot of the scales you'd use etc arn't as melodically obvious as the tones often end up clashing with the those that the song consists of. I'll explain how I mean in a simple way, but don't get too hung up on trying to make sense of it if you don't understand it, as theory is something best learnt as your path progresses, rather than ending up as a mental book of guitar wisdom with crappy hands that can't support your ideas.

For me I naturally make riffs etc using whole-half diminished scales, which look like this:

E-0-1--3-4--6-7--9-10--12--etc

--or add 'flavour' with things from simplified roots, such as using simple diminished riffs like this that are still in the key:

D----------2-5-2------e.
A-----1-4---------4-----t.
E-0-3---------------------c.

Just from playing through those, keep your ears and listen how the notes cling together and generally lack the typical melodies you'd associate with guitar solos (such as typical pentatonic 'classics' like many of the metallica/megadeath ones, or even riffs like 'layla by eric clapton' or anything else you'd consider typical guitar solos). Whilst it isn't worth getting hung up on this, it is worth realising that to develop melody etc you're probably betting sticking with more ambigious backing/songs; ones that consist of only a few chords with obvious intervals, thus allowing more room for creativity.

People will say 'learn pentatonic solos' but they're generally a waste of time, and far too many players seem to get eternally stuck in playing them, which is fine if it works, but a million other guitarists have that same style so aim for something different.

As for the 'been playing six months and find everything easy' it's a common complex we all feel at one stage or another, just don't get too absorbed in it. Learning a sequence of someone else's notes is always going to be achievable just through mindless perseverance.

Rather than learning solos etc, find some that you can breakdown into various 'licks' and learn those, and focus on the mechanics of playing them as well as how and why they interact with the backing. Seeing as you're after death metal etc, here are a few examples. None of them should be too hard for you, because all you need to do is learn them at whatever tempo/rhythmn you're capable of, and worry about getting them acurate later on once you're playing develops. Generally try and avoid the more random/frantic solos that are popular in early CC, slayer or Vader etc

Death - Crystal mountain - learn the leads in this
Death - Spirit Crusher
Decapitated - Three Dimensional Defect - Some nice triplet runs and good examples of how to dot around a central tone and all that theoretical shite
Decapitated - Names - A good example of how to structure stuff and again more licks to fill your aresnal with
Slayer - Mandatory Suicide - A bit of a basic Eb minor/pentatonic wonder, but still it's a cliché for "my first solo" hah

Once you're bored of those, move on to some of the basic Malmsteen stuff. Start by learning the actual songs etc, as usually they have licks that exist on the thicker, lower strings which are not only easier to control, but also easier to get a better tone from when you're first starting. "I am a viking" is a classic to learn and you'll see why if you look into it, as is "Amberdawn" which offers a completely different tempo and rhythmic set etc

The best advice is that asking for advice is worthless if you don't follow it up.

Ten points for patience if you read all of that

What´s hard about it?
It was one of the first I learned, there´s a bit of fast hammer-ons but it´s really not that hard

Okay maybe so, but note the "beginner" thing.......I'll guarantee you that most people playing for less than a year will not find it easy.

Really?
I think I had only played for 6 months or so when learning it.
The only thing that was somewhat hard was that fast part in the first solo with the G pedal tone

Because even a 2 year old could play a better solo over it.

Right, although I like the solo anyways. It just sounds good even if some could probably play it with one hand.

Yeah, it's very easy to play and I would recommend it to any beginner. Better yet, beginners should learn the whole song because its not that complicated. But it sounds cool as hell.

And that whole album is great for learning how to trem pick. There's trem picking through different strings on alot of those songs and that has helped me alot.

The intro solo in For All Tid (Dimmu Borgir) worths a try, for it is so simple. And also the ones in Glittertind are easy to begin with.

Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana also has a simple solo, and so does Beauty and the Beast by Nightwish.

the first solo I learnt fully ( still at .75 speed though compared to the cd) is Gorgasm's Anal Skewer. The sweeps took a lot of time to get down but i can do other songs with sweeping a lot easier

I don't disagree with most of the replies here but for a true solo beginner then blues solos are your best bet. They brake most classical music theory rules and will sound like shit if you play them mechanically strait. They might seem deceptively easy but so do most metal solos (mainly Slayer solos). This might sound vague but the trick is to learn how to "feel" what you are playing. If you don't believe in what you are playing then don't expect it to translate anything remotely musical.

First solos I learned where from BB King, SRV, and Carlos Santana. After time I bastardized them with embellishments, speed, dissonance, and distortion to make them all metal Everything after seemed to just fall into play.
