Want to record on low budget

Hello everyone, I have been lurking here for some time now soaking up all the wisdom.
I finally decided it was time to make an account and get involved.

I would like to record onto my computer but have a very limited budget.

I have sonar 4 but have never been able to use it. There is much latency with a soundcard adapter.

I have a sb audigy.
ok I use a Crate fxt120 amp that has a speaker out but no line out that i can tell, im sure i dont want to use that do i?

My biggest problem is getting the sound from my amp to my computer.
Any suggestions that would sound decent for $100.00 or less?
Im at a dead end here.

100 or less wont get you much
I really have no idea, unless you can just get a cheap condenser and plug it right into the computer, but that wont get you and decent sound quality at all.

Yeah 100$ won't get you anything but a headache with some crapo gear. 200$ will do wonders though. Get a USB/Firewire recording interface with an XLR-in and a basic condenser mic. If you'd rather not do micing and your amplifier has an FX loop, buy an active DI box with passthrough(so you can hear it through your amp too) and XLR out, hooking that up in your amps FX loop, and the XLR out going to your USB interface..

As long as you have a sound card with a line-in jack you can record. I would need more info. Are you just trying to record guitars or a full song (vocals, guitar, bass, drums)?

Check out what I have recorded in my apartment, Listen to all 8 Bloodsoaked (death metal) songs here:

I am just interested in recording guitars at this point. Maybe the bassline also.
Just enough to get started.

try to get hold of a preamp that has a xlr output, then get a xlr cable with 1 xlr and 1 mini-jack (the small ones headphones have) the xlr goes in the xlr output on the preamp, the mini jack goes straight into the back of your computer.

youllneed some sort of recording program, but you should be able to dl some programs like cool edit pro 2.0 or sumtin similair (yes illegal oooh).

this is how i record, and it sounds pretty good.

also i think you could use the speaker out on your amp the same way as i sortof described above, but im not 100% sure.

The easiest/cheapest way that I can think of. D/L from Limewire Sony Acid Pro. You will need a crack. Spend that 100 bucks on a Sound Blaster sound card. Mike your instrument of choice. If it is a stack, put mike as close to grill as possible. Run other end directly into computer. Cheap. easy AND works awesomely. That's what I do, and my demos come out pretty well. I wish I knew how to put some up on here; I would show you how good they can come out using what I just explained.

If you want something cheap as chips, then a condensor mike would be the best way to go. Also having a decent soundcard would help

You don't just plug in a condensor mic into a computer you know. Nor will using a 1/4 or XLR to 1/8"(computer) help you in sound quality if your soundcard is shit(most likely is if you didn't spend 300$+ for it). Btw condensor mics aint cheap.

What you need is an interface(aka external soundcard) either USB or Firewire DESIGNED to take XLR inputs if you plan on using a preamp/amplifier with XLR-out, non-XLR capable amp + a DI box that has an XLR out, OR condensor mics(must have phantom power for this).

Betrayer, since your amp only has the speaker out, the best you can do is get a decent instrument mic + a USB/Firewire recording interface to record with that amp. I would personally suggest getting a better new amp that also has an FX loop and even better: a preamp/line/direct out. Any modeling pre like a PodXT or Behringer V-Amp 2(much more cost-effective) Pro will also do wonders for this if you don't want a whole new amp.

Don't worry much about the recording programs, Sonar, Protools, Cubase, Kristal, etc. will all sound like shit if you don't have decent hardware for recording.

To fix latency problems, get ASIO4ALL(google that up) and install it.

ok i will look into that, i cant really afford to get a new amp right now.
I have a friend with a digitech 3000 he plugs it to his laptop and records nicely, i may take that route when im better financed.

I have a Digitech RP1, an ancient multi FX processor and it sounds useable for direct recording straight into a comp's mic/line jack. Sound is nowhere near professional but gets the job done for practice jamming or pulling together a quick bunch of riffs down.
