Emo
Meaning, of course, real emo like Rites Of Spring. Not the extra-whiney manufactured poprock all the kids are praising these days.
Anyone into it? Anyone know any bands that are still sticking to the hardcore punk roots that it came out of (no matter what numbnuts say)?

You have probably just made SkelatorofSteel vomit to death with the creation of this thread. Good show.

"real" emo is nothing like what now passes off as "emo".
However, hardcore and all genre's it spawned is not my cup of tea.
Kudos for showing balls to post this though

ampere,ex-drummer and guitarist of orchid, pretty good.
can really say much else of any current band, the entire genre has been co-opted, changed into something so hideous that there doesnt seem as much mid 90's sounding emo-hardcore bands anymore, or the bands that started around then simply dissapeared.
maybe coalese is still around, who knows.

I like all emo, the comercialised fashion obsessed one that can't possible pass as emo at all because it just IS NOT, and the hardcore punk one.

It was bad enough when there was just emo. Now there's good emo and bad emo? Somebody fill me in here.

i'm not a fan of it. music like emo is unlistenable especially for extended periods of time. but metal is like adrenaline, like a drug, just keeps you going at full tilt, until you burn out

It's cool that metalheads talk shit about things they don't really know anything about.
Oh but wait....where are the people pretending they know??
And don't forget the ones who just disagree and bitch because they're far too underground and evil (though they deny it).

Leaving the personal aside, I can honestly say I've never come across anything called emo that I haven't found iditoic, ego-centered whining about things that are one or all of a)his/her own fault b)no big deal c)made up.
And I listen to both ABBA and Roxette at times, so metalhead I may be but I do not pretend to be a grim martyr that knows everything.
This said, now that I've obviously stumbled upon someone seriously into emo - could you give your take on the genre?

i really like the original "emo" bands, which played an offshoot of hardcore type stuff, if you are honestly interested, i can send you some rites of spring, they are probably the best "old school" emo band. these guys playing "emo" today, fucking dashboard confessional and shit, is not at all what the genre started as.

I don't like most of hardcore punk's spinoffs, emo in particular. Never really come across any emo band that I've found mildly entertaining. When it comes to punk spinoffs I'm more into crust and grind.

i can't believe you faggots are posting about emo bullshit on METALtabs.com
welcome to poser city buddy, population: you
that reminds me of this hilarious joke i made the other day:
Q: what do emo, punk, post-hardcore, and every band in this topic have in common?
A: they can all suck my dick
i swear emo was made for gay 15 year old kids that want something as equally as gay as them so they have nowhere else to turn.
i don't know shit about emo and i'm still tellling it to suck my dick. what the fuck are you gonna do about it, stab me with your eyeliner pencil? throw glittery makeup in my eyes to blind me? go throw yourself in a river

Isn't that because 'real emo' is a sub-genre of hardcore punk (skipped over wiki page)
Anyhow, fuck it.
Blood Red Bass said it best:
"Emo makes me appreciate metal more."
That's about the only this music ('real' and "fake" emo) is good for. The shit I hear on the radio makes me want to kill every teenybopping emo fucktard in the world. Yes, even the Down's Syndrome sufferers. Actually, nah I'll leave them for a laugh.
Stupidest fucking conforming ever.
Yes, I know that's not what this thread is about, and you will all think of me as an immature, conforming, ignorant metalhead, but fuck it. I dislike everything about emo. The music, the lifestyle, the art.
Anybody here visits Deviantart.com? Well, you, like me, will know emo's destroyed that fucking place.
I'll go listen to Hour Of Penance now, track 2 on Pageantry for Martyrs, and when the blasts kick in at about 30seconds,all my woes will be forgotten.
To hell with this thread.

My. Sides. Nearly. Split. Seriously, you should be on a stage somewhere so I can throw rotten fruit at you.
It's also a refreshing argument that you call emo "gay" yet would willingly be serviced by a guy in an emo band. That's an interesting brand of logic you've got there.

Ah! Now they bring hip-hop into it too! Hip-hop is funk, Prince, James Brown, jazz on downbeat, rythm in poetry yat yat yat! Attitude, respect and independence! Haven't the glam scene and MTV done enough damage to it?
I may not know what emo "really" is, but I know what it has in many ways become so... emo - leave hip-hop alone!

needless to say, that alot of different hardcore bands from the late 80's and, still in some sense, onward, got labelled as emo due moreso of those bands not exactly following the formula of what hardcore had become. bands that were hard to classify musically, bands that werent total "bro" hardcore or the PC leftwing political activist stuff was simply conflated as the same genre as alot of bad bands that even existed back then from which we now have this hated term "emo"
so yeah, there are some bands i like that people call "emo", but for thier time, to me, they were unique and none of them are as sappy, melodramatic, immature as this pop stuff is now.

Just because it's a METAL forum doesn't mean discussions about genres OUTSIDE THE METAL GENRE are invalid. Would you discredit a thread that talks about the works of John Williams because it isn't "grim" or "metal?" Like it or not, emo is music. Good music? Maybe, maybe not. It's up to the public opinion.

another thing, its actually more meaningful here to actually recognize and talk about specific bands, if possible.
i mean.....that would make sense right???...
like, who gives a shit about explaining to some jerk the difference between underground hardcore from before they were fucking born and this pop emo stuff as is the current trend now when they obvious dont know shit about the bands......and hate the people who do.
its the whole "fuck the government" little conundrum for the willfully ignorant, people who dont know shit about how the government works may come to this conclusion.....but it doesnt mean im gonna actually gonna relate to whatever the fuck they are talking about.....sure, fuck the government, but it doesnt mean the same thing.
so yeah, i dont even like most of what is considered "real" emo from way back when, im in agreement with most of sentiments expressed in this thread..........but its so obvious that most of the haters here do not know one band off of dischord records, one band off of ebullition......they dont know a fucking thing about what the hell they are talking about.....so who gives a fuck really.
i just want to point out this little distinction, here.

first off, fall out boy have shit to do with emo, so before you spout off and make an ass of yourself, make sure you know what you are talking about. cunt. fall out boy falls under the umbrella off pop-punk, just like good charleotte, all american rejects, and the like. now what i want you to do is read up on the wiki link i posted, listen to some of the real shit, ie rites of spring, fugazi, orchid, coalese, and then post something intelligent.

Of the bands you've posted, I've only heard a little of orchid (from PxDx split) and I didn't mind it. It's not something that I'd listen to everyday but it wasn't bad. I'm actually quite intrigued with this 'trve emo' and might check out the other bands.
What i've noticed is that it's becoming increasingly more popular to bag out anything suspected to slightly resemble emo and brand it as gay without truly knowing what it is.
Emo is becoming synonymous with the juvenile insult 'GAY!!!1!!1!!!'
eg.

simple as that
we dont need a thouasand sub-sub genres
like emocore
or emo scremo
so with anything with the 3 letters E-M-O used in refrence of overly gay musicical bands
are gay

I love talkin shit about things I don't know anything about! Don't you?? Apparently!!
Emocore=emo
It's just screamo, not emo screamo
You like Zakk Wylde. What's gayer than listening to a middle aged fat hairy guy masterbate for 50 minutes? Absolutely nothing.

in orchids defense, the lp "chaos is me" really outshines thier split releases and most stuff prior.
the drummer is one of my favorites, period. the lyrics are terrible and the singing is monotonously screamed, so be forewarned.

I love Rites of Spring and Fugazi is chill, but even they say that Emo is bullshit. They didn't start it, the reviewers in magazines did.

So what? Same can be said about powerviolence, dudes from MITB complain about that, people still use the label regardless.

i wasn't trying to make a point. I totally call Rites of Sping emo still, haha. I just think its funny/awesome how the bands that supposedly started it absolutely think its bullshit. In/Humanity created "Emo Violence" as a joke and now people apply it to bands.

man is the bastard is one of my favorite band.
"powerviolence" is really ironic, because alot of the bands termed as such spoke against the power of government and the violent means in which they use to an end. alot of left wing politics and such
the term itself was loathed.....by everyone.
in/humanity is another good band, havent heard them in a while.
anyone familiar with Zegota? a really cool hardcore band on the crimethinc label from north carolina, originally.
its not really "emo", but melodic at parts and different from the same old thrashbeats, breakdowns chugga-chugga kind of hardcore

I love that term. It just makes me know the music is going to be fast and short.
Titles are good things because it can help unknown good bands (and bad ones, but who cares) get discovered by people that like the same thing.

Great band! They're originally from around my area. I saw them play I think twice. I am told alot of times by people involved with Crimethinc that I remind them alot of Zegota's guitarist, I think Justin was his name.
