Boss G-E7.
However, its a rhetorical question. Try out a ton of pedals, they are each voiced differently.

An EQ with a volume boost isn't really the same as an overdrive pedal. EQ's just make your amp more sensetive to your playing, OD pedals do the same and add grind and grit to your sound.
Maxon OD808. But I'm not too sure how great overdrive pedals would sound with solid state amps, I think they're only designed to work with tube amps given the nature of how they work...

solo boost, you can use pretty much ANYTHING. Minus distortion pedals... they just muck it all up. For that, all you want pretty much is a volume/trebel increase right? You can use mxr microamp, mxr zakk wylde overdrive, pretty much any EQ, tube screamers (keep the overdrive low, and the volume high), hell, i even used my boss DD-6 as a booster... gives a realllly cool harmonic sound... Basically, get something that wont colour the sound too much outside of the control knobs (anything that isnt a distortion pedal ) and turn all of the colour knobs (high/mid/low, delay, feedback...) to 0, or to a point where they dont affect the tone (halfway for eq knobs and such), and then turn the volume up... most pedals these days have a point where the volume knob on them will actually boost the signal instead of just acting as a cut, and that should get you in the right direction.

When I put my EQ in front of the amp it gives an awesome sensetivity boost for leads, but in a band situation it's not such a good idea cause it doesn't give me a volume boost. I'd have to have another EQ in the FX loop with another volume boost for that. I wish it was easier than having to stomp 2 EQ pedals, my DD-3, and perhaps my mxr phaser for a solo though.

Actually, you can run an OD pedal in front of a solid state amp and get good results (used to do this with a solid state Crate and it sounded fantastic). Sure, it still won't sound as awesome as a boosted tube amp, but it does the same thing. However, I'd recommend a digitech Bad Monkey instead. Not only is it a hell of a lot cheaper than the maxon, but it has both low and high eq's(rather than a single "tone" knob). Since solid state amps tend to sound a bit brittle when pushed too hard, the ability to cut some of the highs out while keeping the sound from becoming boomy is nice. But yeah, try a bunch out at a store before you make any decisions about gear.

Yeah they'll work, I didn't say they wouldn't, but tube pre's distort in a good way when pushed with an OD pedal, SS stuff generally doesn't. Which should be an incentive for SS amp manufacturers to start making decent high gain amps like they used to again(ie: Randall, old Crate, Ampeg, etc.).

i use my emg pa2 with about 8db of gain set on it for my SS stuff and it does fine... makes it really noisy though.
I find it sounds best for a sludgy stoner tone... which goes
emg 85(neck) --> emg PA2 --> boss hm-2 (with gain set low) --> marshall mg15dfx
Or i just use it for a solo boost on my line6 Spider (pretty much any channel), and also as a gain boost for the blues channel which doesnt have enough crunch or low end, so the pa2 makes up for it.
