Crate Stealth GT-50...
Just recently read up on these amps and I think I may end up getting one sometime soon for rehearsal/backup purposes. They're 50W tube 1x12" combos, with 3x12AX7 in the preamp and 4x6v6 tubes in the PA. I hear they're awesome for metal although a bit thin sounding due to the power tube style(and open back cab and speaker choice). I'm not concerned if they're not über-br00t3l because I already own my engl halfstack(and I need an excuse to buy a ProCo Rat to experiment with! ), but I need something lightweight for rehearsals.
Has anyone played one? Are they reliable? I wouldn't be playing anything beyond rehearsal volumes with this. How much can they be had for? I'm guessing 200-300$ though I've seen some reviews claiming some bought it between 100-200$.

6v6's tend to have a problem with breaking up... fender loves them because they somehow manage to stay clean at high volumes... but, if you get them loud enough, they can get fucking br00tal. I played a 1960's 8 watt tweed fender champ once... if i plugged in my V with emg81 and an emg PA2 preamp, and if i dimed the volume (control panel consisted of pilot light, fuse, volume twist /on/ knob, and 2 inputs)... it was fucking amazing... all the grit and crunch i could ask for. Kinda like a combination between Mastodon and Mudvayne in terms of grit, but not as compressed or modern, and didnt sustain as well... it was undescribably good sounding... but it was also class A which will make a difference, because class a/b, though way more efficient, cancels out some of the grit (kinda like a humbucker cancels out high end). Same deal when i played one of the newer (70's? 80's?) champs with the black tolex and 10" speaker instead of the orange tweed and the 8"... But hey, if you have a rat, it will be plenty loud, and plenty gritty, definately great for practice.

One guy at the BCR forums had one of those (head version) and it sounded pretty fucking brutal so go for it.

Yeah I read your reply on this Slabbefusk on an oldass thread, you got a link to that video/clip?
Thx for the info on the sound. I already knew it sounded good for metal so I'm just wondering if they're reliable or if the have cheap components that fail like on the Blue Voodoo combos.

The guy's name is Markus and the band is Exposed Guts if you feel like searching. And hell yeah, it's a brutal little amp. Of course he was pushing the front end with an X2N.

Oh shit I think I've seen their myspace page. I use an X2N and EMG81 too.

The only thing I don't like about them is that there is no stand-by switch on the amp. So, you might have to switch tubes more often than usual (of course, with today's manufacturing, they should still last a while). Other than that, all the crate amps I've played/owned were fantastic in terms of quality so I don't think you'll have anything to worry about. After all, Lee Jackson doesn't come across as the type of guy that would build an amp if he knew the parts in it are shit.

Yes I've heard about that in some reviews. But if I turn it on and wait for it to warm up for a minute without plugging anything in there should be no problem right? Should preserve tube life a lot more.
There's no standby on Epiphone valve juniors, I've seen people just turn em on and wait for a minute or less then plug in.
Yeah Lee Jackson is the shit.
