Depends on what you are going to be using it for... aka band setting, live, at home practice, etc

Yeah there is, if he is actively going to places for jamming the best idea is to have a combo. If you have a car then it won't matter if you go combo or stack if you can fit both in your car.

That much won't get you a decent stack unless you buy 2nd hand(ie: Crate blue voodoo, 5150/6505(cutting corners on a cabinet), Ampeg VH140C, Peavey Windsor, etc.).

As for combos there's a lot of great shit in that price range tho it depends what you play. Ampeg VH140C combo, 5150 combo, Ashdown Fallen Angel, Crate BV combo(they go for 300$, 60W all tube and there are a TON up on ebay now).

I keep my halfstack at home, but I don't have a car so I need a combo for whenever I go play at a drummers house.

Yeah if you drive go stack, better in the long run, or if you dont think you will be needing to move it around so much (say you dont have transportation). Soeru gave plenty of nice amps for that range you should look into.

transportation wise... keep in mind that a 5150 combo is somthing like 83 pounds...

any dual speaker combo will weigh more than a sumo wrestler... ESPECIALLY if its tube...

If you want to break the weight down into 2 parts, while keeping it still convieniently transportable, i'd say get a head, and then a cheap 2x12 cabinet... and then set it up so the cab is standing vertical so you can get more height and a bit more sound spread out of it.

Yeah, even the Ampeg Vl-503, a tube 1x12" combo, weighs 90 fucking pounds! That's a backbreaker... It's an oversized 1x12" though, like the Mesa combos, but still that's fucking excessive.

I wanna buy me a Crate Stealth tube combo, hopefully it wont break my back.
