Ampeg VL series...

http://cgi.ebay.com/Ampeg-VL503-VL-...QcmdZViewIt em

How much do these usually sell for? How good are they tonewise for DM? I know Erik Rutan used a head version of it for leads exclusively in almost all of his bands. I've been considering spending a little more on a combo than a Blue Voodoo and need some advice.

I was reading some reviews and yeah it seems really suited for death metal. It uses a tube for the FX loop and a tube for the reverb too, apart from the 4 preamp tubes and I think 2 powertubes.

How the hell can that thing weigh 85 pounds?! Shipping might cost me an eye for something like that...

Anyone know of any other good high gain 1x12 tube combos besides this and a Crate BV? I've seen some Soldano and Boogie combos but they're way too expensive. The Peavey Ultra and Triumph are said to be decent but I'm not too keen on buying old Peavey products. I know there's a XXX 1x12 combo but I'm not interested in it.

I'm open to any VH-style Ampeg or similar solid state 1x12's, if there are any decent ones out there...

I havent heard much about them, all I know is I love the tone I get from it. Its a heavy fucker too, haha. I know a while back (they are pretty rare) I saw the same head as mine on ebay start at $600, the bid, so I'd say they are worth quite a bit. The sound is very warm and high gain (loads of gain). Mine has a built in power attenuator which is nice too. I go for a tone similar to that of Trey Azagoth (lead wise) mixed with some Terrance Hobbes for the rythmn.

Damn, well you just made me wanna go and buy it again. :P

I can't imagine how the combo weigh any more than 50lb. My Engl Fireball is like 43lb. and most heads are 40-50lb.

I realized that the body of the amp looks very big compared to the size of the 1x12 speaker, so I'm guessing it's a very oversized combo. Might not be what I'm getting because of what they usually go for + shipping(100-150$ to my place). Anyone know of any good quality high gain tube 1x12's besides this and the BV? Been looking into some old peavey shit or Crate TV series on ebay.

Yeah they're fucking impossible to find in Europe too(guitar amps at least, bass shit is more common), Ampeg just never mass produced their guitar gear, then they stopped making guitar stuff(now they just have like a "vintage" rocket tube combo and some other vintagey amps), so it never got to sell in Europe much if at all let alone Australia.

But damn, the VH/SS series and their Lee Jackson amps(VL series) are just legendary and so fuckin solid, I really want to own a VH 2x12 combo but I'm not sure I'd be able to afford it with all the shipping here(150$ ish or +), plus I'd need to get it modded for Euro voltage use(I'd be using my 700W transformer in the meantime but that's not meant for consistent amp use I believe, plus it weighs a ton)
