speaker wars
i wanted to make a thread about speakers and cabs... so here it goes
I just got a new head, and i need a cab for it. For speakers, i'm looking between celestion g12t-75's and V30's... and i have a budget of around 850 Canadian... so 775 US... My amp is a marshall 6100 (its basically a tsl100), I play a combination of stoner rock, hardcore and death metal... so i want a cab that can push out crunch overdrive, full out modern distortion, and sexy cleans... basically i want my distortion to be controlled by my amp, and not the cab.
the current cabs i have my eye on are a marshall 1960A, crate RVB, and the Randall RS125CX. I've heard good things about eminence speakers, but i dont know anything about them, any advice there would be appreciated. Build quality wise, i just dont want it to fall apart, i'm totally willing to open the back and do a Philkilla cab mod.
all advice is appreciated.

Wow didn't know you had that setup. I personally really wanted the RVB just couldn't fucking afford it. I have a feeling from what you listed you would want the v30s because of probably more "mid" like sound that comes from them than the greenbacks. You're probably looking for more of a smoother sound than most which it would seem that the v30s do that. But i would imagine you would almost be happy with any of those cabs you've mentioned. Since they're all good cabs and its just all up to the ear. Each has their own slight variance.

I'm all about eminence personally. I have a cab with p50e's, a cab with man o wars, and a cab with swamp thangs. all kick ass.
a lot of the newer eminence speakers have lots of headroom. like the swamp thangs and man o wars. so they're really clean.

Just wondering, do the band Manowar have anything to do with that line of Eminences? Like are they endorsed by them or something? Being the loudest band in the world according to Guinness and Joey De Maio being an experienced amp tech makes the idea sound very reasonable.

scott splawn makes amazing custom cabs(you pick the tolex, grill and piping) and his speakers of choice are eminence red coat series(man o wars fall into that category)... and his prices are unbeatable. you can get a new straight or slant 4x12 for $750, or an unloaded 4x12 is only $400. i think his prices are shipped, but im not sure.
if you got a little more money to spend. electricamp makes custom 4x12's too. about $1075 shipped. i have a 6x12 from them with man o wars. its just sick.
my vht fatbottom slant has eminence p50e's, i paid about $600 used for it.
avatar makes great custom cabs and they carry the full eminence line. way affordable pricing aswell. i think you can get an eminence loaded 4x12 for about $500-600 shipped.

man, that splawn idea is DEEPLY tempting, now all i have to do is get rid of my line6 spider to get the money for it... my original plan was to trade in the spider with 100$ ontop to get a marshall cab, but splawn is so much more satisfying

You don't need to go with a custom cab you know. If you grab VHT or Framus cab you'd save a bit of cash. Or must you simply have eminences?

cant get framus where i live... the last framus i saw was a used cobra, and dissapeared in a week... and VHT... no fucking clue where to go for that... and dude, the splawn CUSTOM cab is the same price as brand new marshall standard cabs here, plus the shipping (so 70$ for fedex)... and well thats just sexy, fairly boutique cab for a standard price... who can turn that down?

The fact that a cab is custom wouldn't mean much to me personally, I'd be more than happy with a standard V30 cab like a Marshall, Engl XXL or a Boogie or VHT or something. Love my Mode 4 tho.
I just wanna suggest you look at ebay or local stores for 2nd hand or blow out price cabs for a few weeks before buying, it's a horrible experience to buy something then find some store selling a better cab for less.

v30 cab by marshall will cost 300$ or more than a custom splawn for me... man the marshalls with greenbacks are still 1000$ canadian, and the g12t-75 ones are 800... and i've checked every store in my home area, and am still working on my school area (we have lots of pawn shops in london)... but so far splawn is the cheapest choice for quality (i dont like the idea of scooped mids in g12t-75's) at 750 US, which amounts to 845 canadian give or take.
engl doesnt even exist in canada... i barely know a person who's heard of them, and nobody has ever played one... and mesa cabs here... 1200 or more...

Try ebay man you're bound to find something with the speakers you like for even cheaper , Canada is fuckin huge and many US auctions are willing to ship to your place, but if nothing shows up then go for it. That's what I would do to avoid the "Doh, I should've waited" syndrome.

why get a splawn when you can get a custom avatar?!
splawns great and all (i have an amp) but thats more expensive for equal build quality. avatar has the best pirces ever.

dislexic have you heard the eminence tonkers? I was thinking of getting this avatar 2x12 to go with my blue voodoo120h head. do you think it would be better to mix one tonker with one swamp thang? who the hell thinks of these stupid names.

It's opened back, and given that you play metal you probably don't want that thing. Look for a closed back Avatar.

well my plan was to get one of those or whatever comes up on ebay cheap if it will fit my needs and not worry about open or closed back because supposedly avatar will add the other type of back with your purchase for a minimal price, but i do need to look into that.
but really, how bad is it with a semi open back like that at loud volumes? i doubt I'll be turning up my 120 watt tube amp past halfway in our practice room anyway
I was also wondering what it would be like to have one 2x12 semi-open back and one 2x12 closed back. supposedly the clean sound is a lot better with the semi-open back but like I said I really dont know how bad it gets at higher volumes.

The only problem is that it won't have as much bass response with an opened back.
