This is what I do.
Find a song that you like, preferably instrumental, or something that is easy to play over. Figure out what key it is in, then go to http://www.all-guitar-chords.com/guitar_scales.php
and find a scale in that particular key, and play the notes in different random sequences over the tune until something sounds good to you and you know the scale by heart.
For instance, I learned the E Harmonic Minor scale by playing it over Tristania - Cease to Exist. I think that song is in E Melodic Minor, but Harmonic minor sounds fine over it. Only one note difference anyway. Besides, you are not trying to play the song, you are only trying to play phrases over the tune.
Anyway, I am now a sub master of that scale and can play a mean solo over that tune.
That's the only way I can learn scales. I am not disciplined enough to sit with a guitar book and run through random scales.
Good luck.

Try petrucci's "Rock Discipline" video (can be downloaded in eMule)
found it extremly helpful

And bugles calling for them from sad shires.

also, if the backing tracks being played in a minor key doesnt matter which scale, then you can play the solo in any scale your like as long as its in the right key and is a minor scale.

I got ahold of some Rusty Cooleys instructional videos. Pretty sweet i mean its not really how to "solo" but more like building your hand and chops which to me comes with getting the hand of soloing at very high speeds. Figure out scales mess with them get ahold of back tracks and stuff really helps to. It will take time man your ear and hands have to build up to be able to improvise. Also play lots and lots of music on your guitar that you like with solos! I steal alot of licks that are in solos from other bands.

Thats a nice little lick i stole from Sabbath try it out go faster and faster with it. The 14 you bend, Maybe about a half bend.

If you play in a band, you should be able to rely on the bass (and the rhythm guitar). If they keep playing thesame riff under your whole solo, then it is totally up to you to play a good solo. If they change their rhythm section by playing other chords, then simply change your scale to those chords. The solo almost automatically becomes good.
For example: if the rhythm plays Am Am Dm Em Am Am Dm Em then play in these chords.
If then the rhythm changes the chords to Dm C Gm Am Dm C Gm Am then change to this structure.
These are only simple examples, but it worths a try.

Also man if you go to learn a solo in a tab learn that bitch from note to note. Make sure ever bend (well as close as you can get it) sounds just like the solo your learning. This can do wonder for your playing.

I agree; being lazy, sloppy and/or taking shortcuts now will only hurt you down the road.
