2 string or 3 strings powerchords?

Which do you prefer, and why? Or do you like to switch it up, depending?

2 string power chord:

A:-5-
E:-3-

3 string power chord:

D:-5-
A:-5-
E:-3-

I've always used 3, and didn't know most people used 2 until I started playing with other guitarists. I like 3 better, personally, and I find it easier for myself. I use 3 fingers rather than barring with my ring finger.

I don't see the point of this. Surely it depends on what sound you want. It's like asking "what's your favourite note?"

i agree.

i voted i switch it up sometimes. i mostly use 2 strings, but sometimes i'll use three if i want some extra sound in there.

i find it easier to use 2 for really fast parts as well.

I switch it up. When I want to go fast, i do two notes. When I go slow or medium, I usually do three.

My exact reason. 2 strings for fast stuff, 3 strings for a more full bodied power chord.

I voted switch it up. I use each type depending on the type of sound or speed i am trying to achieve.

3 string sounds more poppy, but also adds more grit to the distortion. 2 string sounds dead. This is a stupid fucking thread. I rhymed

I'll play 2 notes when I'm playing something fast, and 3 notes when it's not so fast.

I use my pinky finger to get the 5th and octave notes fretted. On any power chords where I'm playing a power chord on the 5th string, using the pinkey is convenient in case I want to hit the major 3rd on the 2nd string.

Wtf?
Well, for palm muted shit, 2 string all the way for the lower chunk, but for rythm and cool rock and power metal it's gotta be 3 strings to give it that nice ring imo.
I actually always finger a 3 string PC even if I just play the bottom two strings, I find it easier for some reason.

I can't beleive no one has mentioned that if there are not at least three tones played simultaneously, then it is not a "chord" at all...

Or just an interval.

Try four note powerchords ... In a drop tuning you can get five, and it sounds enormous.

oh man... i love that. PERFECT for droning stuff... works really well if you tune your guitar like Strapping Young Lad [(G)CGCGCE] you can just bar an entire fret and drone.

I use 3 strings most of the time. I only use 2 strings if I play a sixth after the powerchord (which means that after playing A/E at thesame time, I then switch to A/F, where the F is right above the E).

3 if speed/difficulty is not an issue;
2 only if speed/difficulty is an issue.

For inverted power 'chords' like:

--------
--------
--------
---5----
---3----
---3----

I'll always go with 3.
Funny thread; things like this help me take a look a facets of my playing I'd never consider dissecting before.

No, that would be a D minor. That is only a mirrored powerchord.
An inversion means that you change the bass note. So a clean chord with a note, a third (major/minor) and a fifth (perfect, augmented or diminished, depending on the kind of chord you want to play) has a custom manner (which means the root of the chord is the bass note) and two inverses (with either the third or the fifth note as bass note). On guitar playing a C major:

-0-------------------------0---------------------------------------------------------0----------------------------------------------------------
-1-------------------------1---------------------------------------------------------1----------------------------------------------------------
-0-------------------------0---------------------------------------------------------0----------------------------------------------------------
-2-------------------------2---------------------------------------------------------2----------------------------------------------------------
-3-this is a custom manner-3-this is the first inverse (with the third as bass note)-3-this is the second inverse (with the fifth as bass note)-
---------------------------0---------------------------------------------------------3----------------------------------------------------------

Mix it up.

3-finger chords for sustaining/slow parts or basic crusty/grindy shit.

2-finger chords for anything that requires fast changes, because the listener gets the point of what I'm trying to play, they don't need to hear that 3rd string if I'm thrashing out.

thats what you would use for a drop tuning chord:

----5----
----3----
----3----

now when you did it like you did. were u drop tuned?

The way RapeAndRuin showed it the first time is called a 9th power chord. One band I know that's used it alot is Carcass.
In drop tuning, that would be how you'd play it. A regular dropped chord would just be barred across the fret.

Thanks for mentioning "inverted chords", I've been always trying to figure out what the name to those chords were.

Yeah, you could call that 'inverted' power chord a 4rth power chord, since it's based on the 4rth and not the conventional 5th.
As for that shape, Soeru, I'd call that a diminished power chord. One of my favorites!

It is indeed a diminished powerchord. I would also call it 'SataniChord', because it is based on the diminished fifth, which was the satanic interval in the Middle Ages. It is indeed ugly, but one of my favorites.

I love inverted power chords, they seriously almost cancel the need to detune your guitar. Most people think you are playing a seven string if you do really chunky palm mutes on inverted power chords in the first, second, and third position on a standard tuned guitar.

Hell yeah inverted powerchords sound amazing on 7 strings, go listen to Morbid Angel's "Nothing is Not". I finger the inverted ones the same as I finger octave chords, with my index(barring the A string) and pinky.

Why is it called diminished?

Haha funny thing is I've been playing for a long time and know how to do tons of complex shit yet I don't know the names of simple chord shapes. I'm a "visual" player.

Edit:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tritone

Diminished chord info.^

Because it is a diminished fifth. I MOTT play them with three fingers, but I mix it up with two or four fingers.

If you play in a drop tune and you use two strings, then you are a n00b. When I use drop tunes (which is only on songs written for drop tunes), sometimes I use five strings powerchords. But then I do not do inverted powerchords, unless I am playing a song that sounds 'awful' without.

Or you have extremely tiny ass stubs for fingers. Fuck, I just can't figure out how you can do a dropped tuning chord and NOT pick up all bottom three strings with the barre.

I'm not voting on this, because it's kinda silly. Using one or the other exclusively just limits the ability to change sound and dynamic.

How did you work that out? I nearly always use two strings no matter what tuning I'm in (even though I will vary a little) because I prefer the sound. Even though, when in drop tunings, I do often find myself accidentally hitting the third string in the chord.

Weird chords you can't do in standard tunings. As well as some funky legato shit. I've also managed to transpose the opening sweep arpeggio in Arsis "The Face of My Innocence" to the lower 2 strings making it a lot simpler, a lot more like a legato, and sounding even more awesome.
