Peavey 5150 or...

ok ok ok, Ive made some posts before, and now, I KNOW im going to get flamed, but I haft to ask.

I can either get a used 5150, or a new valveking(212 combo) now, listen before you throw me out the window.

I mainly play hardcore/grind stuff, and right now, im not in a band, but im starting one soon, so 90% of my playing is going to be in my room for now.

Im going to be useing a rocktron metalplanet or a rocktron zombie pedal(allready have them)

I can't test either of thease amps myself, so im going off opinions of others.
I know the 5150 is a great amp, and valveking isn't, but witch would be more to my style of play..

Btw, its only a $50 differece between the 2.

5150 would be way more suited for you, buy it now, you wont even want to use your pedals

i'd go for the 5150.

you wont need those pedals if you have a nice amp with good distortion like the 5150.

5150.

Keep in mind though, the 5150's clean channel is'nt all that great, but you CAN get a usable clean out of it. But it's not going to sound like a Marshall or a Fender's clean channel.

I'd also buy with it an external EQ unit from E-bay, maybe like an older blue MXR unit. It could help you get better cleans, if you wanted, and while the EQ on the 5150 is expansive enough on its own in my opinion, it never hurts to have a little extra control what with all of those six gain stages.

Whatever you were going to put towards distortion pedals, I suggest you put towards an EQ and Noisegate. The 5150 has GREAT distortion on its own, better than you're going to find in a pedal unless that pedal costs more than the 5150.

Just curious on this. I have read a lot of guys "needing" a clean channel lately. I have to ask....why? Maybe it is because I am a Marshall (800 and earlier) player, but I have always used my volume control on my guitar to control my cleans. You back off on the volume until the signal is clean, then roll the volume back up til you get your crunch. I'm not trying to start anything or sway anyone whichever way, I am just asking.

A dedicated clean channel versus rolling down the guitars volume on the crunch channel?
Firstly, the eq versatality. Secondly, 'cleaner' signal if its going through a clean channel rather than the crunch. Plus, if your playing, live especially, it isnt always convenient to roll your volume down on your guitar, and roll it up on your amp just enough to get it clean and level. Basically, 20 seconds (to do the above), vs 1 second (to stomp on a footswitch).

Not to mention if your guitar doesn't have the greatest pro pots so when you "roll " the volume down it actually just crackles its way to a thinner tone.

Plus, most amps have much different voicings on each channel. Take my ENGL preamp for instance, the clean channel has a very Fender-esque voicing and the Lead channel has a much more modern hi-gain type of voicing. So rolling down the volume on the lead channel will clean up the signal, but it dosent have the rich voicing of the clean channel.

Btw, just so you know, the 5150 weighs 83 lbs. so it's not exactly very portable, as most tube 2x12's.

since it seems you want the 5150 for tone and the valveking for portability why not get the 5150 2x12 combo you can easily find it used

He was talking about the 5150 combo. Heads are lighter than most combos though. Ignoring the cab of course. I wish I knew a drummer that had a cab at his house.

fuck tube combos. imo it's easier to carry around a head and a cab. since they're separate.

That would only apply if you own a car, and one in which you can fit a 4x12.

Does the 6x12 fit in your trunk?

My old 412 fit in the trunk of my car with room to spare (an Audi A4 quattro...) trust me you can fit any stack in a car. i dunno about that fucking 612 monster though haha. needless to say you could put the head in the trunk and the cab in the backseat.

Make sure it has the seatbelt on, something even half that massive can be a serious problem in a car accident.

I don't think a 4x12 could fit in my friends' Seat but I'll have to try!
