Stratovarius
Ok, I have just stumbled on a band called Stratovarius, what are these guys like? Are they recommended? Judging by the amount of tab available, they are pretty popular, but for some (possibly embarassing reason I havent heard any of them...). So can you all help me out here and recommend some songs?

Relatively monkey power metal.
Be careful what you listen to, or your brain may turn to cheese.

They are a fifty-fifty band. Half is great, half is not so great....
Try Hunting High and Low. It's really cool. And The Curtains are Falling.
If you like melodic power metal, they are among the greatest.
Not so good as Sonata Arctica, though.

They are excellent, they play fast technical music thats hard as fuck, Timmo has solos that exceed 17 notes a second most black/death metal bands dont trem pick there riffs that fast (no disresoect to those bands they rock too). If you like trad metal style vox (eg singing not growling) then they could be for you but generally they dont go down to well with most black/death metal fans. Plus as stated earlier they use alotta keyboards so if keys arent yer thing stay away. And they generally have 2 or 3 ballads an album.
Songs Id recommend are
Speed of Light
Legions
Visions (Southern Cross)
Millenium
Heres the midi to 1 Speed of light, this is typical Strato and youll know in 2 secs if you like there style or not.

Because they rock! But as Dermeister said, Sonata Arctica is better if you'r looking for power metal.

Power Metal...don't listen to anything from that genre unless you wanna hear good drums laid out over wanky (but skillfully) played guitars, with singers who got kicked in the balls too many times at age 10, and like to sing about dragons and gnomes.

HAHA!
Thinking about Rhapsody, are we?
BTW, Metal=Life, The Lord of the Rings is from Timo Tolkki's first solo album. It's great, though.....

POWER METAL
SEEMS NOBODY ON THIS FORUM LIKES POWER METAL.
AT LEAST RESPECT THEM FOR THEIR SKILL, AND THE VOCALS, RANGE IS SOMETHING TO BE ADMIRED, OF COURSE NONE OF THE METAL YOU GUYS LISTEN TO REQUIRES THAT.
(I'M NOT PUTTING DOWN BLACK AND DEATH METAL, I LOVE THOSE GENRES, BUT
IT SEEMS ALOT OF THEM JUST YELL.(THERE ARE SOME THAT DON'T THOUGH, BELEIVE ME I KNOW THAT.

I heard them a couple years ago. The music is good, the vocals suck.

Really? I've never had the chance to see them, so I'll take your word for it.
